For more than 25 years the
Sheriff's Reserves have served
several elected sheriffs in Cheorkee
County. At the present time, 18
Cherokee County citizens serve the
sheriff's office in various
capacities. Of the group, 11 are fully
certified and qualified officers.
Sheriff Joe French had these
comments on his reserves at a
recent banquet: "I really don't
know what I would do without my
reserve force. They undertake any
job 1 assign them either as a force
or individually. Their work at the
jail releases full time deputies for
other work. Their work at football,
basketball and baseball games is a
great help. And with 11 certified of-
ficers on the force, I have no trouble
with patrols during vacations or
illnesses. The reserve organization
in Cherokee County is a potent for-

The 66th year for Stephen F.
Austin State University gets un-
derway Aug. 25 with the beginning
of registration for the fall semester.
Officials are anticipating a
modest increase in enrollment,
possibly reaching the 12,500-mark.
Final enrollment total for the 1987
fall term was 12,203. The record for
a fall enrollment was established in
1984 when 12,672 students registered
Officials noted that increases
have been recorded in summer
freshmen orientation sessions and
also in campus housing reser-
vations, providing the basis for the
outlook for a boost in enrollment for
SFA Registrar Gene Barbin said
the first scheduled activity for the
1988 fall semester will be new
faculty orientation on Aug. 23.
Faculty meetings, the opening of
campus residence halls and the fir-
st of two assemblies for all new
freshmen who did not attend sum-
mer orientation are scheduled on
Aug. 24. Also, campus housing
facilities open for occupancy at 10
a.m. on Aug. 24.
Kegistration for the new term
begins at 10 a.m. Thursday in the
Lucille Norton Health and Physical
Education Complex. Two assem-
blies also are scheduled - a second
for new freshmen who did not at-
tend summer orientation and one
for all new transfer students.
Mrs. Ory Hicks
Services for Mrs. Ora Hicks, 81,
Alto, were at 11 a.m. Monday at the
O. P. Allen and Son Funeral Home
with the Rev. Bill Morgan and the
Rev. William Snidow officiating.
Burial was in Lynches Chapel
Mrs. Hicks died Saturday after-
noon in a Rusk hospital after a

will continue the registration
process on Aug. 26, with regular
classes beginning at 8 a.m. on Mon-
day, Aug. 29. Final date to register
for both full-time and part-time
schedules is Sept. 7.
An operating budget of $53.7
million has been approved for SFA
for the 1988-89 fiscal year.
SFA President Dr. William R.
Johnson said the new budget of
$53,736,919 represents an increase
of over $2.9 million over the current
budget. The budget approved for
fiscal 1988 totaled $50,749,942.
