Mrs. Gragard was born Sept. 2,
; 1899, in Georgetown. She received
; a B.A. degree from Southwestern
University and received a Perma-
• nentTeachingCertificate. She also
; was awarded the Distinguished
; Student Degree in 1978.
Mrs. Gragard had lived in Jack-
; sonville since 1922. She was a
; former teacher at Jacksonville
• High School and at Jacksonville
Baptist College for 26 years. She
' was co-owner of Gragard
• Spraggins Swofford Funeral Home
; from 1931-1957.
Mrs. Gragard was a member of
• the Jacksonville First Presbyte-
■ rian Church, a teacher of the
; Golden Circle Class, was first
: PresidentofCH.ShakespearClub,
a member of the Wednesday Study
Club, the Martha Bible Club and
was a sponsor of Beta Sigma Phi.
She was a member of Delta Delta
Delta Sorority.
Her husband, Douglas Gragard
and a nephew, James H. Kerr Jr.
preceded her in death.
Survivors include a nephew and
his wife, Baine and Mildred
Caldwell Kerr of Houston; and a
niece-in-law, Frances C. Kerr of
Houston, the widow of James H.
Kerr Jr.; several great-nieces and
great-nephews; and several great-
great-nieces and great-great-neph-
ews.

Mr. Jowell died Sunday in Alto.
He was born March 4, 1908, in
• Frankston to the late Lloyd and
Annie Martin Jowell. He lived in
; Galena Park for many years and
in Alto for 24 years. He served in
the Navy, was a supervisor for
water pipeline construction and
was a member of the Old Palestine
Baptist Church.
Survivors are his wife, Ada L.
(Turtle) Jowell of Alto; a son,
Wayne Jowell of Alto; a brothei,
S.I. Jowell of Tyler; three sisters,
Lucille Pope of Livingston, Noel
Duncan of Longview and Lois
Barton of Palestine; three grand-
children; and four great-grandchil-
dren.
Bertha
Funeral for Bertha (Bert)
Hendrick, 82, of Gatesville was at
2 p.m. Friday at Scott's Funeral
Home with the Rev. Garland Baker
and the Rev. Bruce McCarver offi-
ciating. Burial was in Restland
Cemetery.
Mrs. Hendrick was born May 21,
1915, in Alto. She was the daugh-
ter of the late H.M. and Martha
McConnell. She was reared and
attended school in Alto. She mar-
ried the Rev. E. A. Hendrick on
B 18,1939, and they made their
home there before moving to Or-
. ange in 1942. They moved to
Gatesville in 1969.
Rev. Hendrick preceded her in
death Feb. 8, 1987. She was also
preceded in death by a daughter,
Martha Hendrick in 1947 and a
sister, Erma Richardson.
Mrs. Hendrick was a homemaker
and worked in the church field
: along with her husband during his
40 years of ministry.
Survivors are a son, James

Mr. Stapp, father of Debbie
Daniel of Rusk, died Friday at
Highland Lakes Medical Center
in Burnet.
He was born May 25, 1930, in
■ Florence, the son of Joseph Homer
and Trilba Presler Stapp. A life-
long resident of Williamson and
: Burnet counties, Mr. Stapp was a
member of the Florence United
Methodist Church, the American
Legion and a 29-year civil service
employee at Fort Hood. He was
also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force
and the U.S. Army.
Mr. Florence was preceded in
death by his first wife, Margie; a
brother, Randolph; and a sister,
Peggy Selvey.
, Survivors are his wife, Mary

Rusk was at 2 p.m. Saturday at
the Wallace-Thompson Funeral
Home Chapel with the Rev. Don
Copeland officiating. Burial was
in Shiloh Cemetery.
Mrs. Miles died Jan. 1 at East
Texas Medical Center Rusk. She
was born March 15,1915, in Rusk
and had lived in Rusk most of her
life. She was a member of the Me-
morial Missionary Baptist Church
in Rusk and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by
her husband, Lonnie Miles, and a
son, Lonnie Waymon Miles.
Survivors are two daughters and
one son-in-law, June Muse of Port
Lavaca and Linda and Guinn
Kelley of Rusk; a daughter-in-law,
Jozell Miles of Lake Jackson; a
brother, Doyle Beasley of Hous-
ton; three sisters, Lee Etta Myers
of Alto, Charlene Meador of
Weches and Janie Wood or Rusk; a
sister-in-law, Corene Jones, of
Rusk; six grandchildren; and 10
great-grandchildren.
