History
Deaf Smith County
PioneersDuring the heydey of the land promoters and
immigration trains, this was a familiar sight at
the new Hereford depot as realtors, of whom
there were many, waited in fleets of "Buick
two-spots" to take prospectors to view XIT
Ranch land which was being cut up into farm
and small ranch property. More than one unwary
prospector-who had been used to travel
by buggy or wagon only-found that the land
he had bought was farther from town than he
had thought; the trip was so short in the
"speedy" automobiles. Note, from left to right,
the livery stable, Hotel Iowa (which was moved
to Canyon after the dry years around 1910),
the depot, built in 1908, and the railroad's
typical pioneer windmill and wooden storage
tank. The coming of the automobile meant the
doom of the surrey, seen in upper left inset.
