Tin Pittsburg Texas Kspreis truly says
that "reputation amounts to but little in run-
ning a newspaper at the present time as true
merit will command the attention and patron-
age of the public long after self-lmpoitant in-
dividuils whose meteoric brazonry shone for
a moment have been lorgotten."
Adirondack Murray pays the following
glowing tribute to the people of this State
and city i "A modest woman has more
security from insult in the streets of San An-
tonio than on Boston common. The Texan
of every grade is habitually courteous to wo-
men. Nor is he quarrelsome with men. At
least such Is my observation. "
Since July 1872 there has not been a day
when the channel at the South I'ass of the
Mississippi river did not have 30 feet of clear
water. The present channel Is the best Jhat
hat been formed since the jetties were con-
structed. It Is ninety feet wide at its smallest
width and it is claimed that New Orleans
new has a belter sea channel than New York.
llENTONsrORT Iowa has a man named
John Holland who Is 102 years old and quite
spry. lie would no doubt make a good run-
ning mate for San Antonio's centenarian
Senorita Martina Morales who is 104 years
old. As John is a tobacco chewer and
smoker and occasionally takes a toddy it is
reasonably certain that he will never live to
see another century.
The only simon-pure Greenback paper in
Texas departed this life only a week or two
ago and now the Republican and Democratic
State committees of Iowa decline to allow
that great apoitle ol Grcepbackism General
Weaver to enter Into the joint discussion
upon which they have agreed on the ground
that the Issues he ralies have been settled.and
that his party is dead.
The saloon keepers of Wisconiin propose
to hold a convention some time In September
and have advertised it In circulars printeo. in
English and German copies of which have
been sent every beer and whiikv dealer In ihe
State. They propose to show their strength
to the political parties in the State and as
it were to bulldoze one ol the other parties
Into acquiescence in their views and Interests.
Queen Victoria has reigned over Great
Britain for 46 years a year longer than the
reign of Queen Elizabeth Only Henry III
Edward HI and George HI reigned longer.
The progress made In various means of civ-
ilization during her reign have been wonder-
ful. In that time the world has gained cheap
postage cheap newspapers telegraphs
ocean steamers telephones and many other
minor improvements and discoveries.
The Richmond Nation says: "The elec-
tion for the adoption or rejection of the
amendments proposed to the constitution by
the late Legislature will take plate August
14 and we advise our people to turn out
and vole for them. These amendments If
adopted and carried Into force will be an in-
calculable advanlsge to the people of Texas.
We aik our readers to give them careful
perusal and then to rote for their adoption."
The Republic Radicate of l'arii pub-
lishes a long and circumslantial account of the
bribery of a number of members of the cham-
ber of deputies and others In the support of
the scheme lo have the government purchase
the lines of railway not already under Gov-
ernment control. It charges that many mem
bcri of the chamber were under regular sala-
ries to forward the scheme with the con-
tingent of a large bonus on success. Mary
names arc made public and others plainly In-
dicated. An Investigation wilt no doubt be
ordered.
An oiiLici.no informant at some of the fash-
ionable watering places points to a woman
dressed In fine ottoman silk and says! "She
is the result of a patent bitters her father
having made his fortune on cocktails.
Another handsomely Jresied woman is the
wife of a face powder and the two young la-
dies you see sparkling with diamonds are bot-
tles of cough sjrup. The swell in the corner
Is a patent pill box." While the item is a little
overdrawn yet it serves to show that the
average great American fortune can be more
often made on a scheme than by the slow pro-
gress of the legitimate channels of trade.
Mr. W. C. Elam one of the principals in
the recent duel has about entirely recovered
from his wound received in that affair and
the other day was tendered a reception at his
office the Richmond Whig. One of the
speakers Col. J. S. Drowning private secre-
tary to Gov. Cameron said : " I am con-
scious that I voice the heartfelt thanks f every
true man in Virginia when I reiterate the
warm welcome to our editorial chief and
champion. He is the man who offered his
life to vindicate the good name of every man
who was bold enough to think and act for
himself and to stand up for freedom of
thought and opinion in the Old Dominion
and to brand the insult to every readjusler
in ' thoughts that breathed ' and ' in words
that burned' and every heart In the great
liberal party of Virginia went with him in
sympathy to the field of honor and danger.
Again thrice welcome and may you long
live to fight Ihe battle of human rights upon
old Virginia's soil."
HOW BOB INGLE ESCAPED.
.Srrlmis Imputations t'ml upon tho Ollleem
AVI10 Cnm e ed lllm to bun Antunlo.
The rieasinton Monitor describes Hob
Ingle the hone thief who escaped while he
was being conveyed to the Bexar county jail
as one of the grandest scoundrels and molt
noted horse thieves that ever breathed the air
of Texas a man who would rather ride a
stolen horse than one of his own and lie for
pleasure rather than profit. And gives the
following account of his escape: The Sheriff
de-ming it unsafe to keep the prisoners
longer here made application to Judge I). 1.
Marr for their removal to San Antonio which
was granted and In accordancb therewitli on
the morning named just about the break of
day he took five of the birds and placed two
in a hack with himself and three (Including
Hob) in a hack that was driven by Deputy
lilackmore Blackmore driving lili vehicle
in the wake of that of the Sheriff
and Deputy Capps was to bring up
the rear on horseback as guard.
Agreeably to this arrangement the hacks
started and had gone but a short distance
when lilackmore called out to Williams that
one of his birds had flown. Hob had com-
plained that his shackles hurt him and they
had been caied.IIe then slipped off his boots
and with them his shackles and jumped from
the vehicle making good his escape to parts
unknown taking with him a horse of Mr.
George Heymann which he found staked but
a short distance from where he eluded Ihe
officers. A halt was made and Capps called
to for assistance but instead of his being on
duty where he was assigned he had tsiken
another route expecting to overtake the party
a short distance on and to this action on his
part is attributed the cause of Hob's escape
for had he been where he was expected and
supposed to be no occasion would have offered
for any of the birds to attempt to get away.
The Monitor or adds : "Why the necessity
for starting at so unseasonable an hour with so
weak a guard is beyond our ken as any num-
ber of our citiz ens would have volunteered
their assistance had they been called upon.
No apprehension was had that an effort would
be made to rescue the prisoners by their
friends (if they have any) and to us it appears
that the whole proceeding was without (nought
and less reason. And again we are told
that beyond having shackles on the prisoners
were free to use their hands at will ; this of it-
self if true deserves severe censure at the
hands of all our law-abiding people. It Is the
duty of those who convey prisoners from one
point to another to see that they are properly
secured and a failure to do this should be suffi-
cient cause for condemnation if nothing more.
We sincerely hope that Bob may be caught
and as ardently hope that le will be taken to
some country where he can be safely kept to
await Ihe action of the law. Our people are
very Indignant over Ihis carelessness on the
part of the officers and do not hesitate to ex
press themselves In such terms that augurs no
good to them politically."
II these statements be true It is evident that
the officers luve by their indiscretion and
neglect contributed to the escape
THE ROYALTY OF THE OROS.
The Ijte (leneral Ord mi Illegitimate Do-
eendiltit of George IV.
The St. Louis Evening Chronicle Is respon-
sible for the following statement respecting
Ihe late General Ord: "A dispatch from
Havana says that the remains of General Ord
will be placed in a vault in that city untl
cooler weather sets in when they will be
taken North. Detective James Neligh of
Omaha says that at the time of the death of
General Ord's father In that city in 1873 he
wa called in by the General and his brother
to make a careful examination ol the body.
He understood that the Ord family w ere re-
lated to some of the royalty of England and
that the examination was made to establish
the death of the old gentleman at tome time in
the future. lie made a memorandum of the
result and filed it away but has not been
called upon by the family to produce it. Mr.
Ord was nearly 100 years of age and was
one of Ihe liandiomeit little men physically
he had ever seen. The marks found on the
body were principally birth marks moles etc.
He did not know where the body was buried.
It was Gen. Ord's Intention he said to have
him go to England in connection with the
mailer but for some reason he never went. It
is said that General Ord's father was a son of
George the Fourth and Mrs. I'ilzherbert.
Assuming lhat General Ord's father was the
issue of the licentious English King and his
beautiful mistress for their connection was
illicit he would have no claim upon the
throne of England and his life or death would
have no importance as far as the throne Is
concerned but the alleged descent is appar-
ently appocryphal as General Ord's father
was according to data born before the Illicit
connection was formed.
