Cureless Driving.
W. Hill appeared before the Recorder this
morning on a charge of careless driving. The
defendant pleaded not guilty. The first wit
ness stated he was driving his buggy down
Houston street yesterday. Just near the
switch a wagon slopped the way. He drove
on to the track to pass the wagon when he
saw the car coming. He made motions to the
car driver to stop at 50 yards distance but the
latter did not put on the break until right up
to the buggy consequently they collided and
the buggy was broken.
The conductor ol the car said they were
going at the regular speed the buggy was off
the track and there was room for the car to
pass but the parties in the buggy turned the
horse right on to the track before the car had
time to stop. A fine of $5 was imposed by
the Recorder.

Last night Captain Charles P. Smith's
gardener driving along the rock quany road
observed some Mexican children whom be
at once recognized as the children of a man
whose brother had been arrested at his in-
stance and who is now in prison for horse
stealing. On his return home at about the
same spot a bullet whistled from the bushes
went through the carriage and grazed his
head quickly followed by another shot which
passed in close proximity to his person;
quickly jumping down he held the terrified
horses with one hind and with the other fired
repeatedly into the bushes in the direction
from whence the shots had come. After 10
minutes hid expired and hearing no sound
he got Into the carriage and drove home. Cir-
cumstantial evidence strongly points to the
brother of the man now in prison. This
same gardener has bclore been molested by
Mexicans who gagged and robbed him when
he stabbed one of them. Since then he has
never been sale.

The editor of a weekly paper at llucyrus;
Ohio vehemently denies the report that he
has lost $8000000 in Wall street. He says
he views with alarm the tendency of the daily
press to exaggerate the news of the day. He
bought one chip in a faro game put it on the
ace and lost and that is all the foundation
there is for the slanderous statement concern-
ing him and his fortune.
