Colonel Robert W rear well known
here died at his residence three miles from
town last evening. The funeral will lake
place from the residence of Mr. Robert Alex-
ander on Marshall street to-morrow morning
at 10:30 o'clock standard time.
The funeral of Thomas II. Howard who
committed suicide the day before yeiterdsy
wss slimly attended only a few newipaper
men aisistlng at the last rites. Rabbi Lew-
inthal kindly offered his services at the grave.
He read the 49th Psalm and at its conclusion
offered up a fervent prayer.
A young man who left this city to secure
a place as copyist at Austin has returned dis-
gusted with the Legislature. He says the
Ayes and Nayes get everything and there
was nothing left for him. This differs from
the New York Legislature where the O's and
No's are said to capture all in sight.
This cold snap seems to be hostile to both
trade and building. It prevents the ladies
from shopping and causes a standstill on
many of the fine edifices now being erected on
account of the mortar freezing. At present
writing it looks as though General Hazen was
preparing us a better assortment of weather.
A horse and cart ran away while standing
la front of Carter & MulUly's stable thlt
morning and after running amuck among
some 20 hacks the Menger bouse was reached
and then the horse returned to its original
place. It was most extraordinary that no
damage was done to the chariots of the
jshus.

Shot Into the Train.
Major Ilethwell Coopwood who arrived in
town this morning gives an account ol the
wounding of a man on the train between Cor-
pus Christ! and Laredo. Some malicious
person fired through the windows of the train
while it was passing and the bullet passirg
through the window struck a passenger be-
low the ear Inflicting an ugly wound. The
latter Is now in the city under medical at-
tendance. Cases To-Morrow.

The Lioiit notices that the city is planting
new trees in Travis park. If the old trees
had been trimmed properly there would hard-
ly have been the necessity for so many mure.
