A Grateful and Heroic Negro.
From tho t'.ufaula (Ala ) Times.
The circumstances of the most' heroic
and romantic deed connected with tho
lata Kverlnghniu disaster was related to
us yestcrdny. After tho boat had been
banked and n roster of tho crew wan
called Assistant Pilot Wlngatc did not
nnswer.
"YVhero'sWIngatc?" some one shouted.
"Asleep In his berth" was tho answer
and by this time tho supports of the
upper deck wtro being eaten rapidly
away nnd tho llaine circled round and
round over the hurricano deck licking
the glass of the state room door to dis-
appear npw and anon through tho black
curls of dense and stifling smoke then
ngaln to streak tho black sky like the
livid pulse of destruction that It was
nnd then to soar away and vanish into
the oblivion of heat to sear the Invisible
atoms of the air. It was In tho midst of
this panorama or horror that n black
form was seen rushing toward Wingate's
berth and Impending death. A surge a
crash and tho door gave way nnd Vln-
gato nnd his rescuer through ways left
freo by 1'rovldence escaped In safety to
the shore. This negro on hearing that
l'ilot Wlngate was In his state-room
banished all fear of his own safety to
rescue him which was done In return
for tho saving of his own life by Win-
gato when the Wylly went to pieces
against the Tort Unities bridge last
April. Ho was going under tor tho
third time when Wlngate snatched him
from his grave. This was gratitude and
heroism equaled by no Instance In the
calamitous records of many and many n
day anil deserves a .monument In
marble.
