people greatly.
The Ohio election will take place one
week from to-ilay and lettle the que"
tlon of who will he the next President.
Tun comments of the nelnhhorlntr
papers regarding the political situation
Is not complimentary to the Turner hall
ticket.
Tiik Dallas Times admits that many
of the Irish citizens of that town Intend
to support Jlr. Blaine and the Irish
lllalne and Logan cluh Is dally recel flng
additions to Its membership. The nunc
her will Increase to huge proportions
between now and November 4.
Tim lllon (N. Y.) Citizen contains the
following statement at the head of Its
columns: "The entire body-matter of
this paper was composed by a type-setting
machine and the paper was printed
by electricity. It Is the first newspaper
on earth to establish this piecedent."
Has tlio Austin Capital any In-
formation regarding Mr. Hendrlck's
movements other than the Associated
press reports? If it has and he Is re-
ceiving any enthusiastic; orations from
the people as he flickers around in lioo-
slerdom and Ohio It will confer n favor
by giving the full particulars.
If Govkiinoii Intj-isi) and Governor
Jones and Governor Norton could le
rorralcd somewhere wlt'iln the reach of
all the people and made to confess their
true sentiments on the free grass ques-
tion which Is now agitating the north-
west part of the State It would simplify
natters wonderfully and give the tired
voter a chance for his white alley.
Anent the Turner hall convention the
Ilrenham Banner tersely and truly ob-
serves: "A convention is by no means
infallible." No lndeedy; especially the
Democratic. Turner hall convention of
Ilexar county. It was Invincible In Its
purpose however and put up the ticket
decided upon weeks ago against any
and all possible protests but the ticket
will not be electad.
Tins Austin Statesman says: "Look
out for a revival of railway business In
Texas. The New York Texas and Mex-
ican railway Is soon to be extended to
Brownsville and thence Into Mexico.
Another Texas road not a thousand
miles from Austin li going Into exten-
sive construction." That's what! and
that other road will be tlio San Antonio
and Aransas Pals railway.
Tins Handera Bugle says: "It Is a
fact too little taken note of that the
legislation of the past few years has
been forcing the Industrious sheep men
to Invest more than their profits In land
and In many esses to mortgage their
profits for some years to come. Conse-
quently these stringent times makes it
excessively stringent to them. But
once over this dlfllculty the sheep men
will he the best situated olass of men In
WesteVn Texas bnt no thanks to the
foolish and one-sided legislation all the
same."

Denim rut In answer to n correspondent
who umila to know whether It Is within
the ruiigo of possibility that either
Cleveland or lllalne can bo elected with-
out the vote of New York says: "Wo
answer that It Is quite possible but not
reasonably probable that the successful
candidate will he elected without New
York. It Is much more probable that
New York will be the battle ground
and that the electoral vote or the Km-
plre State will decide the Issue between
Cleveland and lllalne. Assuming that
Ohio and West Virginia will vote their
National parly predilections In October
that Is Ohio ltepiibllcan and West
Virginia Democratic the Presidential
battle will undoubtedly centre In New
York and the candidate who carries
that State will be about certain of an
election."
Mn. IIuink In his recent speech at
liochester N. Y. among other things
said oftho ltepiibllcan party:"lti'inboil-
les in lis creed four distinct and Impor-
tant doctrines: First penco with the
whole world. Second commercial ex-
pansion In every practicable direction.
Third the cnourogomcnt of every form
of American Industry. Fourth protec-
tion of every cltlren native or natural-
ized at homo or abroad. Under theso
policies the ltepiibllcan party strives to
conduct the government. Under llicso
principles the Republican party presents
llselftothe Judgment of the American
people. On these principles woconquer
or on these wenre conquered. I thank
you gentlemen; I thank you from the bot-
tom of my heart for whatever In this
splendid ovation Is personal to myself;
but 1 ask your attention with especial
emphasis to the Importance of the pro-
positions to which I have so brlelly ad-
verted." Ik it wcro not for San Antonio's cos-
mopolitan character and the truly city
Independence the State press would he
short of subjects. Regarding the action
of the colored citizens the other day
the Laredo Times says: "The colored
people of San Antonio have held n con-
vention and It only remains now for
the women to assemble and endorse
Ilelvn the fair; and the Chinese to con-
ene and resolute "heap danimeo against
Frcnchee" to complete the olln podrlda
or a community orM.OOO It Is supposed
tlio local Journals will not kick against
figures which never lie divided and
subdivided by every political shade of
opinion based on color nationality cx
and previous condition known among
men. Hell's half acre Is undoubtedly a
strong feature or Fort Worth and In the
specialties of the rich rare and racy
the Texas wonder may lead the van; but
In her unique forte of cnlm deliberative
vagaries San Anione n-straddle of the
creek can double discount the city of
the White F.tephant three hundred and
Blxty-lhe days In tlio year."
Til it begging address issued by the
National Democratic commltleo Is u
very peculiar document and shows to
what slralghts the grand old party Is
put to accomplish Its ends. After ar-
raigning Mr. lllalne and the Republican
party generally It says: "Money Is
needed to do this honest work; your
committee refusing to adopt the methods
by which the Republican party tills Its
treasury calls upon all good citizens for
the aid which It receives. No contrlhu
tlon will be accounted too small." It
then concludes with this remarkable
statement: ''Our opponents ennnot he
saved from disaster by forcing tbelr un-
willing candidate to speak to assem
blages of the people. The man who
wroto the Fisher letters will never be
the choice of the people for the Presl
dency of the United States." After the
4th of November this Democrntlo com
mlttee will And out what nn enormous
mistake It has made and Us appeal
alone to the prejudices of the people on
the Flther letters after Mr. lllalne had
been vindicated by a Congressional com
mittee and by the ienate or the United
States when It continued his nomination
as Secretary of State und received nt
that time the votes alike or Democrats
and Republicans showsjusthow bad oir
they are and how hopeless Is the randl
dscy or Mr. Cleveland.
Urn's Hatch New York's great bro-
ker In an Interview with a Washington
correspondent on Thursday In answer
to the question "what Is there in the re-
port that Wall street men are forming
Cleveland clubs?" replied "Just this I
know them all and you could not trust
them with a live dollar bill unless It w
marked. There are no solid business
men among them." "Will Cleveland
carry New York?" "Oh no; he cannot
and Cleveland cannot he elected with
out New York. The State will give
lllalne a majority. I say this without
regard to political preferment and drat
my conclusions only as a business man.'
"Is there any money betting on Clevc
land carrylngNew York?" "Not a dol
lar that I know of. New York will go
or Blaine for two reasons. First there
Is a feeling among business men that
there should be no change In the admin
lstratlon. Secondly the laborers will
not support a man or party that will
not protect their Interests. There will.
however. In spite or anything he two
panics soon one In real estate the
other in labor. There will be an even
Ing up and an evening down In which
both Interests will reach tbelr honest
level. The end Is not quite yet."
Tins blood v shirt wavlnir Is not alto
gether conllned at the North and to
Northern papers. The following from
the Houston Journal Is a mild attempt
of that line that would do credit to any
amateur. The Journal says: "That a
white Southerner should he n Republi
can Is as iiminliirat and unmanly as It
would be for him to cultivate the friend-
ship of those who have stolen his prop-
erty burnt his houses proscribed his
people and rejoice to call him a traitor
and a rebel I It lino use to chop loglo
about loyally and the Union. It was
the Republicans who began the war or
hate who carried It on with unrelent
ing llendlshness and who when tlio
bloody scenes wero over strove by every
inhuman art to perpctuato the hatred
andtomako the strllb eternal. It was
the Republicans who stole our slaves
and never paid one cent for the high-
handed robbery. It was the Republi-
cans who placed the franchise in tlio
hands of the negro race herore they
could read or write. It Is the Republi-
cans who are still endeavoring to re-
duce the Southern pcoplo to the lovel of
a civilization low enough to accommo-
date a race that Is yet struggling with
the superstitions and Ignorance or recent
barbarism. And is It becauso we say
that no true son or the South cannot be
a Rspubllcon without disgracing him-
self iiitut w e ho brought to tho bar or
Radical opinion and be branded as dis-
loyal and bigoted? Away with such
cheap Impudence 1 It Is competent for
the Southern man to be chlvalrlo In his
loyalty and devoted to the ling of Ms
country and yet to detest from the bot-
tom of his soul the principles of that
black Republicanism that has cast n
blight upon ourclvlllzatlon and has filled
the country with canting fanatics and
unprincipled placemen."
