The question of an extra session of
Congress Is In such position that less
than u dozen men can force It nnd as
the present session hits done almost
nothing an extra session would prove
almost a calamity upon the people.
The Stole University does not appear
to be so much an Institution of learning
as a medium for political reward and
along with the bill to employ female
clerks has furnished a line opportunity
for the display of wind on the part of
both Itepresentatlves and Senators.

more than uuuu miles of Hack and yet It
Is asserted not one of them Is paying
dividends on Its stock and a majority

while these roads may stand In ilic post
tlon R( monopolists yet It Is easy to see
that If the proposed granger laws were
passed by the I.egislntu.o that a vrrv
dcclded check would be placed upon the
roads In existence and capital for new
enterprises would be difficult to get.
They bad a poultry show nt Galveston
this week and there was a fine display
oi iwo-siory leatuer-legged chickens
San Antonio had a sort of a show In the
' Jaine line a few weeks ago; the chickens
were clean of limb and small In body but
they were "stayers" and a number of
peculators went broke by reason of the
event. Anent this chicken talk a Vlr
glnlan a few years ago advocated a diet
of game chickens and their eggs for the
purpose of developlag a race ol lighters

The I.ioiit bss received a letter from
21 r. Levi Ten EyoW of Marshall Lyon
county Minnesota who says a party
from that vicinity wMlleave In the spilng
to find homes near Ban Antonio. In re
ply to til Inijulry as well as others
there are good publlo schools In San An-
tonio which are competent to prepare a
pupil for everything for a collegiate
course; that land can he obtained near
the city In bodies to suit all the way
from SS per acre up and that truck
farming cattle and sheep raising or In
fact any agricultural pursuit will pay.
Texas wants and needs and will welcome
producers but tbo professions are over-
iln. Ci.k:i.am has been warned
against expressing nn opinion on the
sllter question by a lot of alleged Dem
ocratic leaders Just as the mugwumps
warned him about civil srrvlco rcrorm

ingly curious In the light of events that
the Democrats derm It incuinueni on
themselves as n party to so warn him.
It Is safe to say that had .Mr. lllalne
been elected Trestdent no set of men
would hate deemed It necessary to warn
upon any subject to be embraced In
his Inaugural address for the simple
reason that Mr. lllalne would have opin-

On tiik subject of railroads' Ilrad-
slreet'ssajs: "It Is true they received
large benefits from the people and It is
desirable that they should be subjected
to such wise laws as will conduce to the
elllclent fulfillment or their duties ns
channels of transportation. Jlut the In-
terests of the South cannot bo serud by
laws which seek to deprive Investors In
railroad property nor of other property
of a Just and reasonable return from
their Investments nnd It Is hoped that
the Southern States will enact no laws
which by depriving capital already In-
vested of lis rightful lcmuncratlon will
Intimidate and drlvo away oapltal which
would otherwise seek Investment there."
Tut: San Antonio correspondent of
the Klorcavllle Chronicle writes to Unit
paper nbout the Aransas road as follow s:
"That the road will be built )ou may
rest assured. The necessities of tho
case demand It. It Is very evident that
free grass Is gone that the stock trail
will not bo granted hyCongtess nnd
tbot the railroads will hereafter control
the transportation of cattle alive or re-
frigerated to market and consequently
we must have more railroads. Compet-
ing lines alone will save us from extor-
tion. Should the enterprise now on foot
by the stockmen to establish their te-
frlgcratlng yards at San Antonio be suc-
cessfully accomplished the road to the
coast to deep water becomes luipera-
tle being the shortest route to the
Kuropcan market. We noticed some
time since the arrival ut Liverpool of n
steamship from Australia with a cargo
of 11000 caicacscs of froen mutton In
good condition. Also that American re-
frige.ated beef In the English markets
Is fully up to the Kngllsh standard. This
Is no experiment but a success and for-
tunately affords to our stockmen a way
out of tho labyrinth which 1 1 mo nnd
progress have woen nround them."
In an article about tho Alamo the La-
redo Times of Wednesday says: "Some
days ago the Times briefly advcitcdto
a ptoject through which this venerable
propetty could be made valuable to tho
State and appropriately so. by Inaugu-
rating In that connection something on
the order of the Olympian contests
through which to culilvato n generous
emulation among the Texan youlhj the
competition to consist of Intellectual In-
stead of physical feats of strength; nnd
now It may not be appropriate to add
that the same should bo placed In charge
of sonic Texan veteran who Is compe-
tent to compile a complete and nuthen-
tie history of tho Slii.e. There are sev
eral of those venerable old men who are
peculiarly tl.ird for this task nnd to
whom I. a prosecution would be n labor
of love; but foittinately none are In suf-
ficiently affluent circumstances to en-
able their enteilng upon tho work with-
out pecuniary aid. A salary of say
$1500 attached to the position of custo
dian of tho Alamo would be sufllclentto
keep the wolf from the door while pro
secuting the task; nnd with proper man-
agement the fees of contestants entering
for the annual prizes could be made to
defray all the expense In tho matter. It
Is not attempted lit this connection to
do more than call attentlor. to this fea
ture of thesubjecl;the samecan be elab-
orated nnd the details defined more cor
rectly than wo could possibly. There Is
an Idea In the suggestion which we feel
quite sure should be developed and It Is
to he hoped that the same may at least
be brought to the attention of the Leg-
islature and the press of the State."
