private in the Spanish-American War, active service as a Batallion
Commander on the Mexican Border in 1916-17, and service
as Commander and leader of a fearless National Guard Regiment
in the Meuse-Argonne offensive of the World War for
which gallant service he wvas awarded the Crois de Guerre, with
Palm, by the Republic of France, and
WHEREAS, In recognition of his tireless and devoted service
as a citizen soldier in time of peace, and, as one of the original
sponsers and now tireless workers in the American Legion, and
WHEREAS, Brigadier General Will E. Jackson, of the 71st
Infantry Brigade was promoted to the grade of Brevet Major
General and at his request he was retired from active service
of the Texas National Guard on January 1, 1930, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives and
the Senate concurring, express the gratitude of the State of
Texas, for the excellent and patriotic service rendered by Brevet
Major General Will E. Jackson and that the Chief Clerk of the
House of Representatives send to Brevet Major General Will E.
Jackson a copy of this resolution.

RESOLVING THAT "FRIENDSHIP" BE THE STATE
MOTTO.

HOUSE CONCURENT RESOLUTION.
WHEREAS. The State of Texas has heretofore officially
adopted the "Blue Bonnett" as its State Flower, the "Mocking
Bird" as its State Bird and "Texas, Our Texas" as its State
Song, and
WHEREAS, The State of Texas has no appropriate motto to
symbolize its history and progress, and
WHEREAS, The name "Texas" is derived from the Indian
word "Tejas," meaning friendship, and
WHEREAS, The said word is emblematic of the universal
spirit existing in Texas and reflects the spirit that has at all
times influenced our people; now, therefor,
BE IT RESOLVED, By the House of Representatives, the
Senate concurring, that the word "Friendship" be and is hereby
adopted and declared to be the motto of the State of Texas.
