UNKNOWN ASSASSINS
ATTACK CATTLEMEN
C. C. Mills May Die. Arthur
Mills Badly Hurt, Near
Belknap, Young Co.
k
Graham, Texas, May 8.—At-
tacked by unknown assassins
shortly before daylight this
morning, C. C. Mills of Throck-
morton was beaten into insen-
sibility, his skull fractured and
his head covered with contusions,
and his son, Arthur Mills, badly
bruised and cut about the head
and face. The assailants of the
two men are unknown, the at-
tack is a mj'stery, and the au-
thorities have been unable to se-
cure a clue from which to work
toward making arrests.
At a late hour tonight the
elder Mills was still alive, but
small chance is reported by the
doctors for his recovery. The
son is resting easily, and his
wounds, while extremely painful,
are not likely to prove fatal. Mr.
Mills is past 60 years of age.
His son is about 25. They re-
side at Throckmorton, where
the family is prominent.
DETAILS OF ATTACK
A short time ago Mills and his
son came from their home to the
ranch owned by the father near
JBelknap, in Young County.
They slept together last night.
Before daylight this morning the
younger man was partly aroused
by the dull thuds of some blunt,
heavy instrument—probably, ac-
cording to the surgeons, a ham-
mer—which was being used by
the assassins on his father. He
endeavored to rise, and the mis-
creants, detecting his movement,
despite the pitchlike darkness,
struck him down. The waking
of the son may have saved his
father's life, for the efforts of
those making the attack were
immediately transferred to the
younger man, who, in his en-
deavor to make his way across
the room to weapons, was re-
peatedly beaten to the floor and
as often escaped a death blow,
courageously maintaining his
presence of mind, so that the
assassins were alarmed at their
failure to subdue him, and hur-
riedly escaped in the darkness.
TO GARHAM FOR AID
Help was summoned by at-
tendants at the ranch house, who
were awakened by the son, and
by daylight riders were hurrying
to this place for medical assist-
ance. Doctors hurried to the
scene. They worked over the
elder Mills through the day, and
news from the ranch shortly be-
fore midnight tonight was to the
effect that there is a slight
chance for his recovery. The
son, Arthur Alills, can give only
a meager account of the attack,
and no reason is assigned. The
authorities have no theory. No
arrests have been made.—Dallas

JOHNSON MAY YET BE
ENTERED IN THE RACE
Rumored in Austin He Will
Replace Davidson on
The Ticket.
Austin. May 9.—(Special.)—
There is considerable talk in lo-
cal political circles as to the
probability of Attorney General
Davidson withdrawing from the
race. There^are many here who
believe that he will withdraw in
favor of Cone Johnson of Tyler,
since it now seems certain that
Davidson cannot be re-elected.
Some of the anti-Bailey papers
have been rumoring that Colonel
R. M. Wynne would withdraw,
but the absolute ridiculousness of
this mouthing is evidenced by
the fact that Colonel Wynne has
already won his race. Unless
the situation is materially chang-
ed Davidson will be overwhelm
ingly defeated and no one knows
it better than he.
There are many here who are
asking why Davidson did not get
out on the stump against Senator
Bailey and it is known that many
anti's are sore at him for not do-
ing so. It is now said that he
won't even get on the stump in
his own race for the reason that
he would immediately be chal-
lenged for joint debates by Colo-
nel Wynne and Mr. Davidson
doesn't relish being ridiculed be-
fore the constituency which he
hopes will cast awry precedent
and elect him to a third term.
Davidson, for re-election, won't
carry as manv counties as did
Cone Johnson, and those which
he will carry will not give him
anything like the majority which
they gave against Senator Bailey.
The fact that Galveston coun-
ty repudiated the cause of which
Davidson is the head is indicative j
of what his finish will be at the
primaries in Julv. And when a
man's home county repudiates
the cause which he represents,
there is little probability that
others will sustain it. In the face
of the airings which have been
given to Davidson's business con-
nections, it is only safe to predict
that many of those who stood by
Johnson are now seeking to re-
place Davidson in order that they
may consistently keep up the
fight which they begun.
Upon the doctrine, which the
antis assumed, thev cannot sup-
port Davidson, and they know it,
and while they want him to with-
draw, it is likely that he will
make insistent demands that he
be left in the race. Davidson is
about the deadest politician in
Texas today, and all that re-
mains is the funeral which will
be held July 25.—Record.
