Had Dorothea Uved In olden tiran,

The vary caprldousneaa which at flret
charmed him, waa now hla trial.
Dorothea continually aought dlfllcnlt
tasks with which to try hla affection.
Though Dorothea had promlaed him
her heart and hand, tbla fact did
not deter ber from encouraging rival-
ry among thoao apparently van
qulahed.
44If you cannot apare an afternoon
to take rae out to the country club,"
she would tell ber flanee aweetly.
"Dob Stewart will be glad to do it.
He called up to see If there was a
chnnce, this morning."
80 Bruce would spare the afternoon
to the neglect of business. Or, "if
you do not feel that you can afford
orchids for ray orchid gown thla eve-
ning Brucie, Hamilton Dane la Jual
eager to get them for me from his
florist"
Alas! Bruce Allan could afford no
orchids from his hard-earned purse.
Ilia one ambition had been to lay by-
each month toward the feathering of
b dainty neat for Dorothea.
I'oor Bruce was growing distráete !
because of Dorothea's pouting dls
pleasure. Pink daisies, or rather, pink
marguerites, were the latest insistent
desire pf her heart. She hart Imp
l^npd to pass a bed of these tnll
flow era and Iminertlstely hurt hem
seized with the desire to give a pink
daisy tea with bundles of the unusual
flowers In evidence everywhere, nwl
herself, clad In pink with a pale yel
low hat. Tt would nil be so "sweet
and odd," she told Bruce excitedly.
Bruce agreed that It would. B ü
this did not end bis part In the mat
ter.
He had tried his best to locate i h*
coveted blossoms, but two afternoon
motoring with Dorothea, failed to di-
ctóse the flower bed of her vision
She was put out about It. holding
Bruce accountable for the disappoint
tnent. So now. upon the sunshlnej
morning when Bruce wandered mood
lly down the hill, not only Hamilton
Dane, but Don Stewart as well, wen-
out on the quest of the tall pink daisy
The triumph of either, at a florist's
shop, would mean hi* own defeat
Dorothea put this plainly. The head
of the business office hod sent him
this particular morning to a rural
township to look over some real es
tate. Bruce had taken the trolley out.
Presently, as he walked across a
cedar-fragrant hedge, came a sweet
singing voice, the bees over the bedgt
hummed accompaniment:
"My own he comes and he loves me
well,
This Is the tale that my daisies tell,"
—sang a girl bending over a bed-
yes, actually—a bed of tall pink mar-
guerites. Bruce by his sudden en-
trance startled the girl Into •H-opplne
scissors and basket, but she picked
them up again undismayed.
"My customers," abe told lilm laugh-
ingly. "usually enter In more conven-
tional manner than vaulting the hed e.
What would you like?"
"Customer," he asked hesitatingly,
"you mean that yoi*sell things?"
The girl nodded.
"Flowers," she answered briefly,
"that's what I raise 'em for."
"And 1 can buy the pink daisies."
Ids tone was eager. "All of them, or
|>erlsaps." he added lamely. "You ask
too big a price."
Then, before he knew It. he waa tell-
ing ber about Dorothea and the pink
daisy tea; of Ids own futile search
and the humility of failure.
"Isn't it funny," the girl remarked
with a whimsical twist to her red lips
one girl In the city wanting, and plan-
ning for pink daisies, just to make a
holiday. And another girl oof In the
country working since early sprint; to
grow the flowers and sell them to earn
bread and butter. Mother and I live
alone and we hate to plan many ways
to keep our home tin* burning. Flow-
ers are the best part of my plan. And
< mixing them along Is pleasure."
"You see," she said. "I am giving
them all. The price will not matter.
You must be—" she smiled, "tie
triumphant knight returning to wl;i
your lady's favor."
"I am not sure," he said, "that I
care to win that favor. I've been
sitting here doing some thl::-ó>g and
comparing. Looking back over pas
week* of my engagement. I cannot see
that either of us baa been very hap
py. Dorothea told me when she was
disappointed last night that the man
who carried out tilla allly wish of
bars, would be hereafter the one man
for her. Dane can buy all the rare
flowers bo wants. As for mo—well,
I'll take your dalalea, and keep 'em In
my own room."
"You need not," aald ths girl quickly,
"I eso aall them."
