By the seaside will I linger,

All the over-burd'ning throng;
And my soul shall rieetn gladness
To the tuneful, swelling strain,
While the organ'd anthem sounding

O, how sweet and holy is it
At the twinkling close of day,
Thus to steal away and listen
To the oeean's dreamy lay :

Sioss or HsALmrumEss.—Ca!eb Gushing sent
a letter to a comittee of citizens of South Carolina,
who had invited him to an entertainment given to
Mr. Speaker Orr, which is full of material for reflec-
tion. The subjoined paragraphs are samples of
tbe tone of the whole letter:
"I discern other signs of returning healthfulness
of the public mind. Hen of all political parties
are beginning to see and admit the anarchical, as
well as the immoral and^irreligious tendencies of
the anti-slavery agitation. It avowediy discards
every duty of government, and every obligation of
law; it ostentatiously advocates political assassina-
tions ; it preaches a religion of irreligión; al! evan-
escent absurdities of opinion are its allies; there is
a monstrous imposture cf superlatively ridiculous
table-rapping tricks, miscilled spiritualism, mov-
ing parallel with it; the stereotyped name of the
vagrant agitators of all colors and sexes figure in
the woman's rights, free Jove and abolition con
ventions;"*we live in a Babel of crotchety con.
ventions, each with its pet folly to fuss over; the
negroes themselves have now taken up the trade
of conventions, with the declared purpose of inva-
ding our families; and the terms of contempt in
which these paripatetic professional coventioni-
zers, male and female, black and white, speak of
morality, religion and the Bible, are only exceeded
by those of hatred which they apply to tbe consti-
tution and the Unión.
"Rest assured that if, in all this, there be peril
to any part of the country, it is peril mainly to
this part, in which such madness ruins riot. Here,
its mischievous e%cts are first felt; and it must
succeed in the accomplishment of its purposes of
dissoluteness and disorder here, before it can

succceed here without a revolution and civil war,

A New Yobk Sensation Item.—Tbe usual seren-
ity of tbe fashionable locality of Avenue C, on
the East River side, has recently given place to
scenes of a scandalous and alarming nature. A
young lady, the daughter of a wealthy oyster mer-
chant residing in the above neighborhood, was jilted
several months ago, by a foreign gentleman of rank,
a Butch rag picker, who boarded under tbe same
roof. The girl, although one of the loveliest speci-
mens of womankind, was rendered callous by the
hopelessness of her restoration to respectable so-
ciety, and she a^pordinglv submitted the dazzling
effulgence of her beauty to the gaze of the heart-
less people of that fashionable locality with consid-
erable reluctance whenever she was obliged to go
to the hydrant for water. In this waj'she bad lived
about two months, when one evening last week,
she met her jilter at one of her^most popular
places of public amusements, and, drawing a fan,
which it appeal? she had carried about ber person
ever since her lover's desertion, she khocked him
down without the slightest remorse. The wretched
girl then escapedj notwithstanding the strenuous
efforts that were made to/irrest her ; and hiring a
vehicle, she was driven, at her owu request, to a
small street in the extreme suburbs of the city and
adjacent to the North Biver, where she took one
of the ferry-boats and crossed to Jersey, where she
was found late last evening. Upon receiving tidings
of the event, her distracted father .who has for
some time past labored under serious pecuniary
difficulties, with the greatest baste opened a thous
and oysters with a table knife.

WE are at length enabled to inform our numerous

has shewn us that h we want a first class mill, it can
only be had by a liberal outlay of labor and material.
The guides for carriage are planed, and the rolls turned
into templets that the log is made to move in a true
line, easy and without play. The saw shaft is got up in
the best style, size 3A inches, with long bearings, so
that we have neither vibration or heating of shaft.
The Improved Head Block we have introduced com-
mand the highest praise of practical sawyers. A large
saving of time with increased efficiency and strength
are combined in this superior Saw Mill. We will not
for fear of appearing extravagant say how much lum-
ber we have cut per hour. If the necesary help to han-
dle a large amount of lumber is present, 1200 feet per
hour of Poplar, Pine, Walnut, &c can cut without
taxing the full capacity of the milL
In offering these improved circular mills to the trade,
we do not expect to compete in price with other par-
ties who build circular mills without regard to conven-'
ience, style or durability* Still we offer them as low
as can possibly be afforded, considering the amount of
labor and material used on them.
The following are our lowest cash prices, which in-
cludes 24 feet carriage and main belt, with engines and
boiler of 18 and 22 horse power, and all other fixtures
complete.
