A mail! a mail!! A
MAIL!!! Arrived in this
morning!! Many old citizens
fell on each others necks and
wept for joy at such an un-
usual sight.
At the oouncll meeting last
flight Mr. Cocke's plan for a
system of water works was
referred to a committee,whowill
report on it. ^othing else of
poi}seqi}ei)oe was done, except
prijepiflg a number of bills to

The telegraph line sbojug
down, we have no late ad*
vices from Hidalgo. We
learn that the official count
began yesterday and was
passing off quietly.
No mail yet, It would appear
that unless we could get our
mails via the M. & M. RR.
we were to have none at all.
The roads are now in fair con-
dition, and with a daily mail
contract we should get at least
a couple of mails a week, if
nothing more.
No city in Texas presents a
be ter opening for a first
class democratic daily paper,
with associate press dispatchs
and stato . specials, than
Brownsville. Under the new
regime such a paper would
have all the federal, county,
and city official patronage.
There is a good stand of
corn in this section, and if
the frosts will only hold off
until an unusually late date
a fair crop may yet be made.
Unless some such good luck
turns up there is likely to be
much suffering among the
people of this frontier during
the coming winter.
Mr. Rou8ett has just re
ceivod at his fruit store a fine
assortment of everything in
his line. New crop lemons,
Malaga grapes, Louisiana or-
anges, bananas, finest apples
received here this year, pea-
nuts and nuts of all other kinds,
new cropfresh citron, cabbages,
onions, potatoes at 75 cents a
bucket, etc,, etc.,
Queer ideas some people
across the river have about
Cleveland. They ityink that
he is sort of an unreconstruct-
ed rebel, and that his first
move will be to take a slice
off of Mexico as far down as
the Sierra Madre, so a« to in
crease the territory of, and
«< /
strengthen the southern states
of the U. S. so that they can,
when they again seceed from
the Union, have a better
chance of success. Ridiculous
as those ideas are, they are
believed by many Mexicans,
and it is thought that another
war between the states may
restore the prosperous rom*
inerciaf condition of Matamo-
ros as it was during the recent
little difficulty.
Advices from Hidalgo,state
that the official count was
madé yesterday before thf
county commissioners. The
Rhodes party being counted
in by a majority of 34. Pre-
cincts Nos. 2 and 4 were
thrown out; the former for
irregularities and the latter on
account of the two boxes, both
of which were declared ille
gal, though the McAllen par-
ty showed a decision from the
attorney general declaring
their box legal. The election
will be contested, tl}e affair
being argued before district
judge jiijsqejl within the tyqxt

ites and O.K. Miller for the

tions are that the Rhodes par
ty have the inside traek on
their opponents.
Yesterday some member of
the Concordia Society discov-
ered an old Irishman, uamed
John Hughes, wjio has for
many years worked for Mr.
Werbiski, lying in a house op-
posite that gentleman's store,
in a most pitiful condition He
was helpless and unable to
move or assist himself. His
couch was an old piece of mat-
ting, and his pi low a brick.
Ho was completely covered
with worms and appeared to
be starving; as when the Con-
cordia men went to care for
hi* , he begged pitiously for
something to eat.- The society
had him removed to the yel-
low school house and properly
cared for. Had not his groans
attracted the attention of a
member of this truly noble
organization this poor fallow
would have perished misera-
bly unaided by any one. He
will be recollected as the little
Old fellow who has for years
been nbout Mr. Worbiski's
place and who used to take
care of his cows and board
yard.
