The absence of tho Editor, who knew
liira, has prevented an earlier notieo of
the killing of It. B. Xiclmlls, Esq., of
(¡on/,ules, by the explosion of the ill-
fated Pennsylvania upon the Mississippi
river.
Few men united more of the qualities
which cause them to be loved, lie was
an accomplished scholar, and a liberal,
public spirited gentleman, A* a law-
yer he was rising in his profession.—
And he was one of those lawyers wliose
literary taste and supeilor uttninmc.its
made him an ornament to the profes
«ion. His address in this city last win-
ter, before the Library Association, will
be long remembered by all who take an
interest in the cause of education.
As a fricud, Mr. Nichollswas silicon
and in social life sensitively refined.-
The terrible accident by which ho fell,
ended his useful career without a mo
incut's warning. Deeply do we dephtre
his death. It is another example of how
much remains to be done before lifo is

Wc are not-much given to criticism
"We were once disposed to contemplate
with charity the frailties and infirmities
«if our fellow creatures, and to look with
un eye of credulity upon the world of
mankind. We supposed that all per
turns, with whom it became our duty or
plensuro to associate iu our intercourse
with society, to be our friends; nor did
we ever think of suspecting the lideli
ty of any one's professions, until posi-
tive demonstrations convinced us of thei
insincerity. As we grow older, howev-
er, and arc compelled to plunge into
the troubled current of business trans-
actions, we are reluctantly constrained
to look .upon the world in a light differ-
ent from that wo were wont to do. To
analyse tho motives of men—to study
liie anatomy of human character—and
to discriminate the vices that pollute,
and the virtues that adorn society—in-
deed requires an ncutc perception.—
Sometimes they are so delicately and
nicely blended in tho composition of
man, that they almost neutralize each
«other, and present a subject whose mor-
al features it is almost impossible to
'comprehend. Again, the depravity and
turpitude of tho heart stands out iu
t>oM relief, and the destructivo thunder-
bolt slumbers in tho cloud, gilded with
the brightest rays of sunshine, present-
ing a practical illustration of the re-
mark, that "a man may smile, and be a
villain still." Hypocrisy, ingratitude,
and a multitude of other infirmities, seem
to find a nest iu their bosoms. They ap-
parently delight to prey upon character,
bo it ever so pure, and to bring it down
to a level with their own.
Had we tho power our pen would in-
•dite reformation «pon a heart so des-
perately wickod ; and our voice would
.invoke, in strains of earnest importuni-
ty, tho soft and delicate hand of virtue
rto cleanse tho receptado of vice of its
.impurities, and to melt, with truo peni-
tence, tlkb soul corrodcd with sin and
deformed with iniquity.
Wo are indulging In no personal allu-
■ion* ; but it fcaa been onr misfortune,
if ft misfortune it be, to meet with just
such characters is the eourao of our
l ii pilgrimage through life.
" When thou art buying a horso or
diooaing ft Wjfb," saya tho Tuscan pro-
verb, " shut thine eye , and commend
thyself to Uod,"
Hcntinu a Gresn-iiorn.—Our boat
stopped to take in wood. On tho shore,
amongst a crowd, was a remarkably
stupid looking fellow, with his hands in
lis pockets, and his under Jip hanging
down. A dandy, ripe for a scrape, tip-
ped nods and winks all about, saying:
" Now I'll have some ftin. I'll fright-
en tho greenhorn." He jumped ashore
with a drawn bowie knife, and brand-
ishing it in the face of tho "green 'un,"
exchtimed--•" Now I'll punish you; 1
have been looking for you a week !"—
The fellow stared stupidly at his assail-
ant. lio evidently had not sense
enough to be scared—but ns the bowie
knife camo nearer to his face, one of his
huge lists suddenly vacated his pocket,
and fell hard and heavy between tho
dandy's eyes, and the poor fellow was
floundering in the Ohio! Gretney jump-
ed on board our boat, put his hands iu
his pockets, aud looked around—"Muy
be," said he, " there's somebody else
that's been looking for me a week?"
English Kui.it is India.—Mr. Layard,
since his return to England, has been
giving lectures on India. In one of
them, he said he regarded the outbreak
in India as a just act of retribution,
iner ted by English rule iu tho country.
He believed that the revolt had its orig-
in iu cases that had been in operation
Ibr years, and iu causes tbatr«n?tvntVi p-
cr rooted than the grievance of the
greased cartridges. Interference with
rights nud customs weru among the
causes, lie was told the missionaries
had done great good. It was certain
that the principles of government that
prevailed during Lord Dulhousie's time
liad, in the main, produced the out-
break. He believed Lord Canning him-
self to be equal to the task which had
been imponed upon him, but then he
wus thwarted by a weak and vacilla-
ting Council. The report of cases of
mutilation were quite unfounded, and
the Sepoys should net bo sweepingly
condemned. England must commence
