The Southern Intelligencer

This Austin publication released its first issue on August 19th, 1856. From its founding until the Civil War, the newspaper was an antisecessionist, pro-Union platform, published by William Baker and Irving Root. Funded by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission through the TexTreasures Early Texas Newspapers program.

Early Texas Newspapers

The Early Texas Newspaper Collection project provides access to more than 12,000 pages of Texas newspapers that date as early at 1829, including the Telegraph and Texas Register, which was in publication during the Texas Revolution. This project was funded by a TexTreasures grant from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission.
