In the exorbitant charges made for handling ships cargoes at that port. Ship*
coming to Port Arthur for cargoes of lumber have to pay more than double
lor their stevedoring that they pay in other pbrts on the coast, and, it is
claimed by some of the shippers, the work then Is not done In a first class
manner. The sltuatjon in this respect has become so distressing that thefo
has'«been a movement inaugurated among the shippers to either secure a
change for the better or to abandon the port. This move is made necessary
from the fact that it has become very difficult to secure oharters for vessels
to Ioéd lumber and when a vessel^ is chartered It is at a rate high enough
above the ordinary freight rate to. covet the increased cost of loading at that
It Is a surprise to many that thepeople interested In the upbuilding of
Arthur have been content to. allow this situation to exist there without
making an effort to secure proper treatment of both ship masters and shippers.
They certainly have been aware of the state of affairs that existed there and
have evidently shut their eyes to it, or else have had an Idea that ships would
le there in any event. The situation has become serious and If Is time for
Arthur to wake up to her own Interests and see to It that ships are
as well or better there than at other coast ports.

Sam T.^Swlnford, tHe retiring general sales agent of the Kirby Lumber com-
pany, who will relinquish charge of that department On September 1, was an
Orange vfcttor tbi* week, spending the day here last Tuesday. The object of
Mr. Swinford's visit was to (see about getting the company "fe barges In shape
'"and arrange to begin,^hipping tie on the recent order for 700,000 taken by the
Kirby company for tlievBrownsville railroad. Mr. Swlnford says that he will
use seven,bargee and two schooners in this work, shipping the ties by water
to Corpus Óhrlstt, from whehce they will go by rail to their destination. The
entire order will amount to 20,000,000 feet, and all of it Is to go forward by
water. ABked as to the general situation and the outlook for the lumber trade,
Kr. Swlnford said that he considered prospects better now than they had
been for the lumber business. He looks forward to an especially big
démadn from Texas during the coming fall and' winter, as a big -corn crop
has already been made and a big cotton crop is a certainty, despite the
ravages of the boll weevil and the cotton worm. The fact that there are no
stocks on hand at any of the mills will have a tendency, be thinks, to stiffen
the price of lumber very materially and maintain a steady value on the com-
modity. Mr. Swlnford returned to his "headquarters in Houston Tuesday night.
"Ahiong the visitors to Orange this week was Jerome Swlnford. Jr., of the
new Houston lumber firm of Beatty ft Swlnford. Although onlyttoing buslpess
for themselves since the first of August, this firm has already landed some
nice contracts and have made connections with mlllB that will make « possible
for them to get right into the business and begin making shipmeni
Swlnford has been connected with the sales department of the Kirby
company and recently made a four of the state, and his opinion based u
his observations, 1b that there will be a larger business in Texas for the lum-
ber trade this year thai?* there has been for a number of years past. The
trouble is going to be, he thinks, not in getting the orders, but in getting the
lumber with whtch to 1111 them, as stocks are short all through the yellow pine
belt, except at mills on the Kansas City Southern. There are some stocks
fctong that line.for the reason that the road, has been unable to supply trans-
portation facilities for moving the Btock—and the outlook for an improve-
ment along that line is very poor* Both Mr. Beatty and Mr. Swlnford are ex ,
' perienced lumbermen, and the Leader predicts for them an abundant and un

erprlses in Texas. The Hilgard mill is located on the Houston, East ft
Texas' railroad, ninety mileB above Houston, and Ib logged from a
^ „ indent body of pine lands, acquired a short time ago by Mr. Moore. The
mill has every facility found in a modern lumber manufacturing plant and Its
' ' luct will rank among the best.

The reclaiming crew of the Orange Lumber company has reached Mississippi
i In the work of reclaiming logs that have been stranded on the banks of
Saklne and are progressing rapidly with the work, pulling Info the river
i/our hundred to six hundred logs per day. The crew Is in charge of
"sin Ed. Elllngstbn, who keeps things on the move. As soon as they get
le further, up the river, they expect to put In even more than they are
they Will find the timber much thicker on the bankB. ' The steamer
accompanies the party and is used as a pull boat, having bean fitted up
with hoisting machinery for the purpose.
B. F. Bonner, assistant to the president of the Kirby Lumber company, spent
the day in Orange last Saturday on business for the company. Mr. Bonner
is vice president of the Four States Immigration League and has this week
announced his appointment of delegates at large from Texas to the Trans-
Mississippi Commercial congress -at Seattle, Washington, among his appoint-
ments being Messrs.^. H. Stark and L. Miller, of Orange. Mr. Bonner reports
lumber conditions very favorable and says that the outlook for the fail and
♦Inter is better than it has ever been and he anticipates an extraordinarily
large demand for the product of the long leaf yellow pine mills.
M. E. Howland, who was formerly employed as a sawyer in one of the big
mina here, but who has recently located at Deweyvllle, has returned to Orange
and will locate here again for the present. Mr.' Howland has Just returned
>m a visit to New Orleans, inhere .he has been making an effort to lboate
"b Gartner, who so mysteriously disappeared last week, and of whom not a
single traoe has been found. Mr. Howland cannot explain the mysterious dis-
appearance of Gartner, who seems to have actually disappeared from the ikoe
df the earth. '
Mr. W. H. Stark, general manager of the Lutoher ft tfoore Lumber
pony, John Dlbert. general manager of the Lutcher ft Moore Cypress Lumbar
company, and E. W~ Brown, general manager of the Dlbert, Stark ft Brown
Cypress Lumber company, met in Orange this week for a general consultation
on matters connected with their combined interests. On Wednesday all
three gentlemen, accompanied by C. T. Patterson, a prominent machinery
man of New Orleans, made a trip up the Orange ft Northwestern railroad to
the new logging camps of the Lutoher ft Moore Lumber company.

company, at Lutcher, La., was in Orange last Saturday, spending the day here
