Notes

Colonel Nicoll F. Galbraith Sr., 1896-1986, served in the United States Army for three decades, beginning his military career in 1917 and rising to leadership positions in the Philippines before and during World War II. Prior to the war, he commanded Battery A, 24th Field Artillery (Philippine Scouts), and later served as Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff (G-4) for the United States Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE), overseeing logistics and supply operations during the defense of Bataan and Corregidor. In the final days before Corregidor's surrender in May 1942, Galbraith delivered surrender orders to isolated American units, carrying both American and Japanese flags to prevent unnecessary bloodshed. After the fall of the Philippines, he endured more than three years as a prisoner of war in Japanese camps across the Philippines, Formosa, and Manchukuo, and transport aboard infamous hell ships.
