the irritation, which caused it.

HE life of a barn

change in one sense.
He h constantly

ent people. Almost
all of them are that
way. They are dif-
ferent from each
o her. This is a wise
provision of
by means ot
we are enabled lo
distinguish lndividu*
als, one from the other. The barn stormer
moving about the country, therefore, has
an opportunity for the study ot human na- j
ture which is naturally wonderful. He sees
lar^f numbers or people everywhere, ex-1
ceptingin his audience , of course. This j
is really the only place where he can be by
himself—where he can be alone and com-
mune with himself.
>trmiing about over the Union as I have
for the past four months, I have had the
pleasure of seeing and communing with a
buinber of men, all prominent In some line,
and thinking that their personal appear-
ance as it stnick me might be of interest to
the reader, I have reluctanctly consented to
write some impression* of a f w of them.
Joseph Cook, as the greatest m >n we
have on the faoe of the earth to-day, ac-
cording to calculations made by himself,
would naturally come first. He is a grand
man, engaged in thinking thoughts dl the
time, of which lie is the theme. He o ca-
sioally takes a day off. during which he
curses the newspapers in an earnest way
and then he goes back to hover over his
porcelain nest egg of thought.
Joseph Cook might have a good deal oí
fun if he would just oversee the universe
daytimes and let some one lse do it at
nigiit, but the slightest irregularity in tho
h ibitB of a planet will bring Joe ou't of bed
in an instrnt. lie worries all tue time lor
lcar that a new laid planet will wander
away iuto thp brush and get lost.
He dreads to die. ir>t 60 much on his own
account, but becatuse he wants to be spared
to those who are so poorly prepared to get
along without him.
When he i> colicky and fretful it is not
that he cares a cent about it personally, bu ,
because he Is all the time afraid to die and
Mr. Orinneil still hat tbe letter written
by Mr. Greeley at the time, and although
he has not yet succeeded in reading it ail,
he is absolutely certain, almost, that Mr.
Greeley suggested that he would do well to
go west. And so he did. It seems odd,
now, that Mr. Grinneh should have been
addressed as "young man," for he is in the
sere atd yellow leaf period, having just
left his measure for a new set ni teeth a few
days before 1 saw him, and which had not
as jet been delivered. But he was a good
talker, none the Ics«. and as full of life as
on the day he started out for Springfield,
then a ve.-y young town, and began to dc
newspaper work in ord^r to fit himself io'/
the ministry. He q> it the pulpit on ae--
count of his voice, which, in trying to ad-
just itself to the acoustics ol his salary,
nature gradually narrowed down until it couid

celebration. Probably for Aontbs
tor. He has been accustomed for so long
to go around with a long-nosed oil can
searching fora hot journal In the sohr sys-
tem that he actually believes himself to be
largely responsible" lor atmospheric condi-
tions and astronomical phenomena.
In direct contrast with the firm and self-
reliaut Cook let me briefly mention the i
name of the shy and reticent Dr. Mary
Walker, of Washington, 1>. C. Shrinking
at all times from the gaze of the World, lift-
trg at times her sunny little head like a
dewy daffodil with a pen wiper overcoat,
and then agaiu shuttin-_' up like a jack-
knife, she is sí en no more for quite awhile.
Dr. Mary Walker d.e >es plainly at all
times, and at eventide irons out herow-
trousers so that the crease down the le or
limb i.i the envv and admiration of al' the
other men in Washington. She says, how-
ever, that in case you are not where you
can obtain a hot llat iron, you may fold the
troupers straight down from the first sus-
pender button in front bringing thes* two
buttons together, and with a fold down the
centre of the back you have them In good
*hape to again fold directly across the knee.
Thtn by putting them under the mattress,
you will find in the morning a very desira-
ble crease down the front of each leg or
limb ol the pants, panties or trousers.
Dr. Mary Walker is a self-made man,
weighing in health a little over eighty-three
pounds. She wears a Derby hat, "Lord
Chumley" ovorcoat, and trousers of ele-
phunt's breath cheviot held in place bv .vs we linrricdiy diiappear.
Washington if you go at it right and can
elbow your way up to the bar.
This naturally brings up to my mind the
name of "líazzle-Dazzle" Iiiddleberger,
who has just clced his tempestuous career
as a senator, and whom>.y now. at home in
the quiet of his back yard, carefully scan
his highly llavored paat. As usual, the
Congressional Kecord will contain only the
most measer account of his clneing re-
marks in the senate, but it wtil go along in
the memory ol thos ' who heard it with the
spec, h of Andrew Johnson, as twin argu-
ments against the excessive use of mince
pie flavored with spirits.
in closing this letter I will call attention
to the fact that the barnstormer runs up
against one query which Is duplicated over
and over again, till it becomes with us the
refrain for a topical song. It Is, "Where
do you go i'tom here?" And bo as It falls
into the rude rythmical shape, I append it
here:
''And vlitre J" you go from here?" asked the bust
at our hotel,

who answers the ring of our bell

Ilcr practice prevents her in a great de-
gree from mixing up in society, even if it
were not for her shrinking nature. AVhen
she does go out. however, the matter of de-
collt tf dress does not worry her. She
never wore a low cut dres9 in her life, and
Vet people may be found everywhere who
will tell you that she has doné very little
for ihearood ol society. She wears a swal-
low tail coat on dress occasions, and, in
winter, to prevent taking cold, wears the
▼est of ber business suit next to her mor-
der to protect the chest. She steps blithely
aiong tne street, trying to be a perfect gen-
tleman, but meet'ñg with insurmountable
obstacles at every stop.
With "call again" hushed on hit trembling lip,

Bear Discipline.'
A traveler who was crossing the ItockT
mountains overheard a teamster teil th<
story of a mother bear and her cub, giving
what he called a good example to hum u
mothers in family government. This team
ster was going up the mountain lor pin
logs, driving a wagon. On the top of a
large rock by the side of the road was :>
young bear. The mother had started up
the mountain as the team appioached.
"The cub looked ko cute," said the team-
ster, "lying there with his paws droppi g
over the edge of the rock watching the
horses as they came i p. Presently the old
bear came bounding back to the cub, and,
giving it a nudge with her nose, started up
the mountain again expecting the 'young
one' io follow.
"But the cub made no move. The oh!
bear tnen came back the second time, and.
taking the cub in her arms, gave him sev-
eral culls.
"This time the cub obeyed orders and
followed tbe oíd bear in a gallop up the
side of the mountain.
"He knew, that cub did, that he'd uettei
mind, for that old bear wouldn't stair an}
more foolm'.*
JOSEPH COOK at WORK.
Dr. Mary Walker may be seen frequently
lit the various departments in Washington,
modestly asking to be appointed to some-
thing. or later on escaping from the door of
the depar ment hurriedly, in response to an
i ppeal bv the doorkeeper.
On a muddy day she may be seen fre-
quently standing on one foot", and with the
other resting on a dry goods box, cheerily
rolling up the ieg of her trousers so as to
look like a chappie. She is a good physi-
cian. but au indifferent surgeon, I ani told.
She hates to cut people's legs off but
makes a specialiu of diseases of horses and
children. I do not know this. I just give
it a* a rumor. She would accept a portiolio if
It were thrust upon her. but she would
die rather than ask for it. If she could be
appointed minister to some place, aud tbe
appoiutment earns in a way that she could
not honorably refuse it, she would accept it.
She could turn her patient over to some
one else, or knock him in the head and go
at any time.
In her old home at Oswogo, N. Y.,one
time. Dr. "Walker, In passing by a boy on
the street who was moodily squirting with
a if irdeu hose, said something to the boy
which he could not brook. So he turned
loose on Mr. Walker by means ol the hose
until she was a sight to bshold. Looking
like the pioneer wife o! a venerable polyg-
amist. on the way home, through the rain,
in an old endowment robe, she made her way
to the nearest justice of the peace and secur-
ed the arrtst ot the boy. Great crowds of peo-
ple gathered at the trial. People knocked
each other down in their efforts to get
into the court room. At the end ot the
trial the boy was found guilty. He
was tiued "s5 aud trimmings, which
amount was paid by the jury, alter which
ilie crowd presented him with a gold head-
ed cane.
A few week* ago I met t>3 board a Bos-
un bound train the venerable Josiah B.
Orinneil. for whom the thriving young city
of Gripucil was named. He is as' hale aad
heart/ as he was when the historical inci-
dent occurred which gave him his start and
■ade a classic oi that simple sentence
' Young man. go west!" Josiah was the
young inan to whom Horace Greetey ad-
dr ssed the above remark, and Mr. Grin-
nflihas demonstrated that it was a wise
one. While the chances are somewhat
narrowed down for a young man now to go
west and start a city aud build an opera
house and open a bank, the theory that a
young man will do better among strangers
as a rule tban where lie has grown up and
is st 11 called a boy by his neighbors, holds
good. It is a good thing that he should
have the props knocked out from under
him Instead of rocking back in the home
nest and opening his birdling mouth so as
to reveal his inmost thoughts, ai the same
lime expecting from year" to year that the
parent bird will eoma aud trop a large,
luicj worm la it.
Nearly Got ths Minister.
A good minister was talking to a cías of
i young people who had become interested in
re'igioús matters through the influence ol
the Moody meetings. He was impressing
upon them the idea that a man should carry
his rellgiou into his business.
"Don't i eep your religion exclusively for
Sunday. Pi ay to Him for success in busi
ness. 1 believe it is right for a man to n>k
the Almighty lo increase his business aud
make it prosper."
'•But," said a young man present. "I am
an undertaker. Would it be right for me to
ask the Lord to give me a boom Tn business"
The minister was nonplussed for a mo-
ment. and the class evidently regarded the
i question as a poter. But the divine finally
' arose to tbe emergency, and replied:
"While I don't think it would be right
for you to ask the Lord to make deaths
plentiful in order that your business might
thrive, yet you could ask that in case orany
deaths in the community the funerals might
be thrown in jour way."
The Greedy Savages.
"Yes,"' said the ludian commissioner,
sadly, "itis very discouraging indeed. 1
went to the reservation myself to see if
something couid not be done to prevent
the Indians from starving to death. I es-
tablished two additional d iy schools and
j had the Indians tautht io siug and in-
; structed in the use of the globes hoping by
the elevating and refining influences of ed-
¡ ucation to d.vert their minds from gross
aud earthly appetites, but they seemed to
take little interest in such things and con-
tinued to die right along, and I am afraid
we will be compelled to give them some-
thing to eat before it can be stopp- d. i

military administration. I think the army

missioner leaned his head upon his hand
and sighed with the air of a man who was
struggling with a great and weighty proh.

DOCTORING IN THE DARK.
£
No seusible surgeon will attempt the
erf or manee of an operation Rivolving
uman life iu a room seHtided from the
proper amount of light. A practitioner
will not attempt the diagnosis of a com-
plicated disease unless he can see the
sufierer and make an examination
upon which to base liis opinion rela-
tive to the course of treatment neces-
sary to bring about a complete restor-
ation of health.
Notwithstanding the impropriety of
such an action there seems to be a
Sreat deal of doctoring done in the
ark.
By this it is not intended that a lit-
eral meaning be inferred, but that a
great many mistakes are committed
Because of the darkness which is the
result of ignorance. It needs no illus-
trations to demonstrate that gross
ignorace has caused many fatal mis-
takes to be made in the treatment of
diseases by those who profess to be
learned in the art of healing.
In many diseases several organs are
more are less implicated and what
seems a primary ailment ma}' be one
quite remote. For instance, a severe
headache may have its origin in a dis-
turbed stomach. On the other hand,
sickness at the stomach may be caused
by a blow on the head. The seat of
typhoid fever is in the upper part of
the bowels, but most of its worst syrnp
torns are often in the brain.
Symptoms of disease as well as dis-
eases themselves are oftentimes fol-
lowers or concomitants of some unsus-
pected organic disease and this is pe-
culiarly true of lung, liver, brain and
heart diseases in general, for it is now
known that they are the result of kid-
ney disease, which shows its presence
in some such indirect manner.
Several years ago a gentleman be-
came convinced of the truth of this aud
through his efforts the world has been
warned of kidney disease andas a re-
sult of continued effort a specific known
as Warner's Safe Cure was discovered,
the general use of which has shown it
to be of inestimable benelit in all cases
where kidney treatment is desir.tble or
necessary.
When consumption is threatened see
to it that the condition of the kidneys
Is immediately inquired into and if
they are found diseased, cure them bv
au immediate use of Warner's S:ife
Cure and the symptoms of lung decay
will íapidly disappear.
There are too many instances already
recorded of the terrible results pro-
duced by a lack of knowledge concern-
ing the cause of disease, and human
life is of too much importance tobe
foolishly sacrificed to bigotry or ignor-
ance.
