D.>es Writing Tay?
This question I rccentl put to an
old friend who has successfully follow*
ed the profession of literature through
many a year of storm and stress. 1 say
•'followed," because in his wooing; he
persistently ran after tbe fair and fickle
darae ere ho won her hand and her
dowry. Happily, he is well married
almost long enough to have a silver
wedding.
The answer I received maybe tersely
summed up thus: "Wr ting pavs i!
you know how to wriio and what to
write. " ]Now, the two propositions
contained ¡n this answer are worthy of
brief consideration.
First, how to writo: The young
writer usually starts out, I think, pos-
sessed with tho one idea to get what he
calls a style! He expects to make
writing pay b: the mere clegance of
Jeweled words, high-sounding ep tliets,
and well-balanced periods. Thus,
many a promising wr ter has found
himself wrecked, at the outset of his
literary venture, on his style. Fla.nly
speaking, writing for style does not
pay. For. re mo ruber that there ar«
too many literary lapidaries who
can cut. sot and polish the jewels of
rhetoric w th more subtile sktill than
yourself. Thousands of manuscr pt
have been •'returned with thanks,1*

Take the writers of fict on who
build up year after year their pretty
Queen Anno cottages of words. Of
cuurse, the disappointment is keeft
when we find that, after all, their
houses are tenanted only by ghosts of
ideas. "I could write,'* said the witty
Tom Hood, as lino plays as Shake-
•pheare's, if I only had the mind; but
the worst of it is. I never Itava the
mind.*' Al>! there's the rub. The
writer who does not know how to
writo will rarely have the miml.
Secondly: Tne writer who expeots
to make writing pay must know whut

what people are willing and ready to
