This book gives a history of the Philosophical Society of Texas from its founding in 1837 up to 1987, with articles authored by members of the society depicting different aspects of the history. Included are block print illustrations and ten appendices.
Originally founded in 1837 by noted Texas figures including Sam Houston and Mirabeau B. Lamar, the Philosophical Society of Texas was revived in 1937 at the time of the Texas Centennial as a membership discussion group. Toward that end, the Society holds an Annual Meeting for its members to host a focused discussion on a primary topic of relevance to Texas, ranging from politics, history, and the arts to education and the natural world. Since 1937, the Proceedings of each meeting are printed and distributed to members and publicly available through university and college libraries statewide and online, fulfilling the Society's pledge to support the “collection and diffusion of knowledge.”
