The Alliance Picnic.
The alliance picnic at Phair last
Saturday was a grand success in every
particular. All the local members of
the alliance and many visitors were
present to participate in the alliance
meeting and to pay their respects to
the bountiful supply of all kinds of ed-
ibles which the good ladies of the
community had prepared for the oc-
casion. The people commenced to*
gather in the beautiful grove at the
school house at about 9 o'clock and at
11 there were a number of people pres-
ent. The alliance held its regular
monthly meeting while the visitors
and those present who did not belong
to the order sat around and talked
about the crops and politics. At 12
o'clock the alliance adjourned and the
good ladies commenced to prepare the
table for dinner. The baskets and
boxes filled to overflowing with cakes,
pies and sweet meats came iu from
every wagon and by the time all of
them were emptied upon the table it
looked like a grand banquet set
among the trees. All present enjoyed
a grand dinner, after which seats were
arranged under a massive live oak
and Dr. Robinson addressed the peo-
ple. The doctor is a candidate for
congress on the People's Party ticket
and made a very good speech. Mr.
W. G. Love of Velasco replied to I)r.
Robinson iu behalf of democracy
pure and simple and made a splendid
speech. Jno Ross, president of the
Phair alliance made a short speech in
which he made several good hits.; He
explained why the Joint discussion be-
tween himself and Col. Rowan did
not take place. Mr. Rowan was un-
able to be present on account of sick-
ness and Ross declined to make his
regular speech against the St. Louis
platform, for the reason that it would
be taking the advantage of Rowan.
The assemblege broke up at 5 o'clook
everybody well pleased with the
events of the day and returned home
with many good wishes for the peo-
ple of Phair. Messrs H. C. Burlew,
A. B. Mays, W. G. Love, W. M. Hol-
land, Mr. Robinson, L. A. Abbott,
O. O. Nation, The Times man and
others ot Velasco were present and
enjoyed themselves hugely.
Services in the New Churches.
j Sunday the 5th day ofJune 1892, was
truly the Lord' day in Velasco. The
day was bright aud lovely. Early in
the morning good people were seeu
! going up to the holy house of God, and
as it is the practice in the. holy Cath-
l olic church, mass was s*ui at 6, 8 and
10 o'clock a. m. At the close of mass
> Father J. F. O'Connor stepped to the
< front of the pulpit aud requested the
• audience to remain till after service.
He began by explaining the univer-
sal observance of Pentecost by the
holy Catholic church, and in a most
eloquent disoourse of thirty minutes
he held the attention of his hearers
closely to him iu every word he utter-
ed. He spoke ot the power and good-
ness of God and said the best people
are those whom we flud members of
the church; it is not that there is so
much wickedness among ohurch mem-
bers but that any aot of immorality on
the part of a ohurcb member excites
more atteution than the same aot
would when committed -ty' those of
the world. The sermou Wfs fully up
to the most sanguine expectations of
Father O'Connor's friends here. He
is evidently a cogent thinker, a logi-
cal reasoner and a profoundly eloquent
speaker.
The choir under the leadership of
the accomplished Mrs. Le Doux, was
composed of Mrs. E. P. LeDoux, organ-
ist, Mrs. N. F. Corr, solo and chorus,
Mrs. McCabe, soprano, Miss Ella La
Beauve, alto, Miss Lola Reed, soprana,
assisted by father Hinzelmard, sang
pieces from Luige Bórdese, with spien
did effect.
After the adjournment at the Cath-
olic church at 11 o'clock, a part of the
congregation repaired to the Baptist
ohurch to hear a flue disoourse from
Rev. Dr. W. E. Tynes on the interest-
ing theme of the "Advantages of
church counection." The writer was
present at both services and was for
cibly struck with the happy coincl
deuce between the two sermons. Fath<
er O'Connor laid great empbais on
the duty of the christian and became
quite eloquent when he spoke of how
an act of immorality on the part of a
church member attracted public at-
tention, which being done bv ninety-
nine in a hundred of the world would
not be noticed as black never looks so
black as when contrasted with white.
All who heard Dr. Tynes ser-
mou will remember the 'identical
language being used by him.
On this point Dr. Tynes said when
there is a wrong doer among church
members he is like a black Bheep in a
flock of white ones, he looks a great
deal blacker for the contrast. You
are ready now to say thin is certainly
an evidence of special providence; well
perhaps so, when we consider the
fact that these two sermons were the
first ever delivered in their respective
church, that both were occupied and
consecrated in one and the same moru*
ing, and the further fact that the two
reverend speakers never met nor or
they at all personally acquainted, and
yet all who heard the two sermons
readily perceived the many points of
similarity all the way through.
We refer to the morning service.
The evening sermou by Father
O'Connor was also a splendid dis-
course. His theme was ''Holiness."
As a speaker he is remarkably com-
prehensive and exhaustive ot the full
merits of his theme.

clever geutlemau In whom everbody
has implicit confidence.

of Brazoria county that they may well
be proud of their representative on
