In 1966, a dream became a reality for the people of Madison County when Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Parten (local civic leader, rancher, oil man, and businessman) gave 400 shares of Union Oil of California stock to its citizens to purchase a building for the Madison County Library.

Madison County Area Newspapers

The first recorded newspaper was printed in 1888 by J.B. Hall ad, called The Texas Watchman. It was short-lived, and the next newspaper published was six years later in 1894. Thomas J. Stevens, assisted by William F. Bookman, published his paper, The Messenger. Stevens then sold the paper to a schoolteacher, W.W. Sharp, and the name was changed to the Madisonville Meteor.
