Oakland Cemetery, Section 1
The original part of Section 1 begins with the James O'Connor Mausoleum in Blocks 1-3, & 5
and ends at Oak Avenue (near a circle) with blocks 83 and 84 occupied by the Hooe, Ray, and
Seay families. Other blocks were added later. The numbering continues with Block 85, behind
Block 49 (Putnam family) and Block 50 (Wilmoth and Linceum families), running down to
Malcolm X Boulevard; then going up and down until reaching back to the cemetery entrance
with the Tenison family (Block 160). As this section follows the same curve, it is sometimes two
blocks deep and sometimes four deep. There is barely recognizable path between the first two
sets of blocks and this additional portion. Just behind blocks 51 to 62 are seven rows (tiers) of
the single section. Row (tier) 7 was originally numbered as 12 blocks. It ends behind block 91
(Thompson). It is provides a definition between Section 1 and Section 30. The other single tiers
drop off at shorter distances. [Editor's note: To view a Google Maps image showing the location
of the cemetery, go to http://tinyurl.com/6gsr7u, to the Google Maps location for Oakland
Cemetery. From there, you can englarge the image to view details. Plots mentioned in this survey
are located in the area that is shaped somewhat like a boot to the left of the entrance. Section 1 is
the front of the boot; Section 30 is its heel.]
A key to the symbols used in the table can be found on page 63. A list of the funeral homes
follows the key.
