Obituaries from The Southwestern Advocate 1939
Dr. Charles Watts Alexander, M.D. was born in Weimer, Texas, on November 5, 1866, and
died in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on March 8, 1939. Interment was in Memorial Park
Cemetery. He was married in 1891 to Leona Parrish, who survives him. His only son preceded
him in death.
Mrs. J. H. Phillips, nee Mattie Elizabeth Oglesby, was the wife of Rev. J.H. Phillips at Pinehill.
She was born near Bessemer, Alabama on March 31, 1882. She was married on October 8, 1900.
She is survived by her husband and three children, Mrs. William Osburn, Percy John, and Miss
Mrs. M. A. Patterson was born on December 25, 1850, in Dade County, Missouri. She came to
Texas in 1870 and married Mr. A.G. Patterson on December 6, 1883. She is survived by
daughter, Mrs. J. N. Trigg, her major caregiver.
John Cross Bean was born in Columbus, Mississippi, on July 30, 1856, and died on December
24, 1938. He married Miss Hattie Bullett on December 26, 1882, in Brookston, Texas. He is
survived by 2 children, John C. Bean Jr of Arizona and Mrs. Ruth Cagle of Paris, Texas, five
grandchildren, one great-grandson, and four sisters. Burial was at the Odd Fellows Cemetery,
next to his wife.
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Height Moore was born in Clay County, Ala. on July 17, 1856, and died
on March 14, 1939. Services were held in the Methodist church at Hylton, Nolan County. She
was married to W.F. Blair in 1874, and had five sons and three daughters. Mr. Blair died in 1891.
She later married W. F. Moore, who preceded her in death in 1913. They had four sons. Mrs.
Moore is survived by 10 children, 50 grandchildren, 85 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-
grandchildren, plus a host of other relatives and friends.
John A. Noble, son of Rev. John S. Noble, was born April 14, 1852, in Doaksville, Choctaw
Nation, Indian Territory. He died March 10, 1939. He was married to Miss Lucy Jones on
March 17, 1870. His wife preceded him in death on October 13, 1938. They are survived by their
four sons, 12 grandchildren, 19 great- grandchildren, plus numerous relatives and friends. John is
also survived by 5 brothers and sisters. Services were held in Cone.
Mrs. Sallie Riggins Hilliard was born in 1858 near Linden, Alabama and died on March 19,
1939. She came with her family to Texas in 1870 and lived near Luling, Texas, then later
Lockhart. She raised her younger sisters and a brother before marrying J. R. Hilliard in 1885.
They had and raised eight children of their own.
Mrs. W. R. Allen (Leota) was born December 12, 1861, in Rusk, Texas and died March 26,
1939. She was the daughter of William and Isabell Summers, who were early settlers of
Cherokee County and part of the founding members of the Rusk Methodist Church. Leota
married William R. Allen. She is survived by the following children: Mrs. R. C. Tucker of Rusk,
Joe C. Allen of Kemp, Jos. H. Allen of Palestine, Mrs. Cutis McDanies of Dallas, Russell Allen
of Henderson, Mrs. M. W. Totty of Palestine, plus 20 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
She was buried in Jacksonville, Texas.
