Scholar-in-Residence Weekend at Congregation Beth To rah
Congregation Beth Torah
warmly invites the Dallas Jewish
community to join in welcoming
and learning with internationally
renowned authority Jason Kalman
at the Mark A. Siegel Scholar-in-
Residence Weekend March 12, 13
and 14.
A vibrant and active synagogue
in pursuit of learning, Congrega-
tion Beth Torah is dedicated and
devoted to providing education
for people of all ages and levels of
Jewish knowledge. Outreach to
members and non-members is the
cornerstone of synagogue func-
tioning.
Dr. Jason Kalman, assistant pro-
fessor of classical Hebrew literature
and interpretation, Hebrew Union
College-Jewish Institute of Reli-
gion, Cincinnati, Ohio, received
his Ph.D. from the Department of
Jewish Studies at McGill Univer-
sity and is a research fellow affili-
ated with the University of the Free
State, South Africa. The author of
numerous books and articles, Dr.
Kalman is recognized as a gifted
speaker sharing knowledge in for-
mats that bring his listeners closer
to understanding and appreciating
Jewish history, ideas and issues. He
is a gift to the community as Jews
explore biblical literature together.
"Professor Kalman is part of the
newest generation of Jewish schol-
ars, and I am excited to learn with
him in our community," says Beth
Torah's Rabbi Adam Raskin. "I
was introduced to Dr. Kalman by
our former Youth Director Gerry
Hoch, a friend of his from Mon-
treal. I was immediately impressed
with his fresh, dynamic applica-
tions of biblical texts to modern,
real-life situations."

tee, she recently spoke with Dr.
Kalman and just glows as she an-
ticipates his visit. "Hebrew Union
College is on a par with Harvard,"
she commented. "Their standards
allow for the highest of the high
to be on the faculty. Not only is
Dr. Kalman a scholar but a real
person as well. He is coming with
his wife and baby for this week-
end and is down-to-earth, warm
and approachable. Our Scholar-
in-Residence Weekend is made for
learning, questioning, shmoozing
and feeling comfortable with oth-
ers who seek to grow Jewishly."
Gary Booth, co-chair, re-
marked, "Typically, synagogue
happenings attract members of
that particular shul. However,
when Congregation Beth Torah
offers a program of this caliber,
people in Dallas know that quality
awaits them and register to attend.
We are looking forward to hosting
Dr. Kalman's visit and welcoming
all participants."
The Scholar-in-Residence
Weekend begins Friday, March
12, with Shabbat services at 6:30
p.m. followed by Shabbat dinner.
Dr. Kalman's topic is "There is No
Suffering Without Sin: Early Jew-
ish Readers Interpret The Book of
Job." The biblical Book of Job has
troubled its readers for thousands
of years. The paradox of seemingly
undeserved suffering caused by a
just God seems to be without reso-
lution, yet virtually every Jewish
intellectual seems to have offered
