Texas City Sun

The Texas Coast News, the first newspaper published in Texas City (1895-1897), recognized the need for comprehensive coverage of Galveston-area coastal communities, many of which lacked local newspapers. In 1915, The Texas City Sun assumed this responsibility, providing regular coverage for communities across Greater Galveston County, including Alvin, Santa Fe, Dickinson, Bacliff, Kemah, League City, and others. Even as some of these towns developed their own papers, The Texas City Sun continued to serve the region until its closure in 2004, maintaining a commitment to broad community coverage.

Galveston County Area Newspaper Collection

Galveston’s rich history is filled with stories of achievement, tragedy and recovery that are still studied today. Its port of entry has given the city a unique position in Texas history. News from Galveston was noteworthy to people across the United States. Cities such as Richmond, Virginia regularly included sections on Galveston in their newspapers.
