with wool yard. Fluffy flowers
in shades of blue and purple
rest in a luxuriously thick back-
round of white. This rug mea-
sures about 4 1/2' by 3', and
her next one planned is to be
100" long. Her colorful braid-
ed rugs include one made from
an old couch cover, another
from khaki shirts and some old
dresses, and another from a
friend's kitchen curtains. Her
friends often save remnants for
her. She says that, "If I can
make something out of nothing,
I really feel like I've accom-
plished something."" So, many
materials which might other-
wise have been discarded have
instead been used to create
something of lasting beauty.
And Mrs. Bass is already plan-
ning another project.

NhW YORK Jack
Nicholson has got to he a great
actor. It doesn't take two
film critics' awards to prove it
Pair a half hour's conversation
with Jack Nicholson, with his wild
and funny portrayal of drunken
Cieorge in "Fasy Rider," and you
know it's true.
lor while George is a deep
South-drawling ne'er-do-well, the
real Jack Nicholson is a soberly
witty, brainy, creative, in-
tellectually probing man who it is
hard to imagine drunk, in jail, or
on a motorcycle dash to freedom.
He's been too busy writing, pro-
ducing. directing and acting in
"underground" movies that only
come aboveground, like "hasy
Rider," through sheer luck.
"This is the luckiest movie that
I have ever related to, and I've
related to about 30 iri one way or
another." Nicholson said, as he
relaxed in his plush room at the
St. Regis Hotel, a couple of days
after the New York Film Critics
joined the National Society of
Film Critics in naming him best
supporting actor.
Nicholson came to Hollywood
on a visit a do/en years ago. and
went to work for the Hunna and
Barherra cartoon team on the
M(iM lot. He "just wanted to see
some movie stars."
When a producer asked him if
he wanted to he an actor, he said
no. "It surprised him" he recalls,
"but not nearly as much as his
asking surprised inc."
Deciding he didn't have a "hig
career as an office hoy," Nichol-
son went into little theater "for
seasoning," and once even got "a
play that would support you" at
$95 a week. Next came the lead in
something called "Cry Baby Kill-
er." which he found embarrassing.
Nicholson then became involved
with a group of young writers,
producers and directors who were
turning out the kind of movies that
frequently win high praise at film
festivals.
He was cowriter and coproducer
of "Head," the first Monkees
feature, and wrote the script for
"The Trip," coproduced by Peter
Fonda. Fonda was later to pro-
duce "Fasy Rider."
Nicholson believes that his
greatest achievements to date arc-
two westerns. "The Shooting."
and "Ride the Whirlwind." which
he wrote, produced and acted in
Both were shown at the Cannes
Film Festival, and have done well
in Furopean showings. They have
been seen in this country only by
college audiences.
