Study Club wins
CAP District Award
The Florence J. Scott Study
Club of Rio Grande City was
recognized at the 77th annual
Convention of the Texas
Federation of Women's Clubs
for having won first place in the
South Texas District in the
Community Improvement
Program. A first place award
certificate and a award of fifty
dollars was presented to the
Study Club delegates during the
"Faith for our Future" Awards
Banquet.
The Community Im-
provement Program, sponsored
by Sears, Roebuck and Co.,
awards prizes to Women's
Clubs who have improved the
quality of life in their com-
munities through various
service projects. The Study
Club won the honor for its Youth
Career Day Conference held in
March, 1973, with Mrs. Martin
Garza, Jr. as Chairman.
The Florence J. Scott Study
Club was also honored during
the Junior Awards Luncheon.
The local Junior Woman's Club
received a Certificate of Ap-
preciation from the National
Association for Retarded
Children for valuable service in
behalf of the retarded. The
Study Club also received cer-
tificates for 100 subscription to
the Texas Clubwoman
magazine for 1972-1974. A
second place award went to the
Study Club for its yearbook, and
an Honorable Mention was
made of the Club for its ac-
tivities and report in the Home
life Department.
The 77th annual Spring
Convention of the Texas
Federation of Women's Clubs,
with the theme, "Our American
Heritage-Reverence" 7-9 at the
St. Anthony Hotel in San An-
tonio. Attending the convention
from the Rio Grande City
Woman's Club v/ere Mrs. Felipe
V. Ramon, President, and Mrs.
A. V. Peterson. Delegates from
the Florence J. Scott Study Club
were Mrs. Lucinda Hinojosa,
Mrs. James E. Peterson, and
Miss Nydia Reyna.
The Study Club delegates
attended Junior Workshops on
Tuesday, May 7, and a dinner
on the San Antonio River was
enjoyed that evening. Junior
Fun Night was held in the
Junior Director's Suite and
attended by over 50 Juniors and
Juniorettes from the State of
Texas.
Wednesday, May 8, marked
the formal Convention opening
with TFWC President Mr. A. C.
Hughes presiding over the
morning activities. A keynote
address was given by Mrs.
Wendell Winger, Recording
Secretary for the General
Federation of Women's Clubs.
A Junior Business Meeting
was also held on Wednesday
morning, with Mrs. Joe M.
Crouch, TFWC Junior Director,
presiding. The Junior Awards
Luncheon was held Wednesday
at 12:ISO p.m. The program
included Departmental
Awards, Standing Committee
Awards, Special Awards,
Membership Awards,
Juniorette Awards, Out-
standing Juniorette, and
Outstanding Junior Club-
woman. An S&H Silver Tray
award was also presented. The
Fashion for Fun Style Show
climaxed the Junior Awards
Luncheon.
Following the luncheon, the
Junior Clubs reconvened fro
reports from Junior Depart-
ment Chairmen and District
Junior Directors. The Women's
Clubs met in General Session.
The "Faith for Our Future"
Banquet was held at 7:00 p.m.
with music provided by Mrs.
Frank Martinez, accompanied
by Mrs. E. G. Garcia. The
speaker was Mrs. Barbara
Culver, County Judge of
Midland County, Texas.
Awards were presented during
the program.
Thursday morning's ac-
tivities began with voting for
TFWC Officers. The Women's
Clubs met in General Session at
8:.10, and reports were heard
from the various Divisions,
Presidents, and TFWC
Projects. The Texas Heritage
Luncheon was held on Thur-
sday, with the theme
Reverence for Our Past." In
the afternoon, delegates and
visitors enjoyed a tour of the
Institute of Texan Cultures.
The installation ceremony
and reception for the incoming
1974-76 officers was held on
Thursday evening at 8:45.
Musical Selections and the Club
Collect preceded the report by
the outgoing TFWC President.

Rattlers end season
with impressive 14-6
Mercedes executed an about
face in the sixth inning here
Friday, when Gilbert Moreno
blasted a grand slam homer to
spark the Tigers to a 9-3 District
Hi-AAA baseball victory over
Rio Grande City to give Mer-
cedes its third consecutive 16-
AAA baseball championship.
Mercedes will meet the
District 15-AAA champ in the
bi-district playoffs. Mercedes
completed the regular season
schedule with a 16-2 searon tally
and a 7-1 district record behind
reliever Art Gonzalez who
pitched for his seventh victory
with no losses.
Gonzalez relieved starter Ray
Trevino in the first inning after
Trevino gave up three runs and
one hit.
Gonzalez hurled the
RIO GRADUATE HONORED-1- Miss Jane Munsell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Munsell
of Rio Grande City, was honored with a graduation party by Mr. and Mrs. David Pen-
nington. The party was held on Friday night, May 10, and featured a spaghetti supper. The
girls also enjoyed playing games and having a good time. Attending were Misses Anna
Garza, Celeste Sanchez, Annabelle Guerra, Olga Molina, Druanne LaGrange, Rosa
Villarreal, Maggie Trevino, Edna Garcia, Sylvia Olivarez, Elena Chapa, Ann LCasas,
Minerva Barba, Nannette Lopez, and, not shown, Chayo Munoz, Oneida Barrientos, Jolly
Olivarez, and Diana Muniz.

struckout six.
Rio Grande City finished the
season with a 14-6 district
record. Paraxides Bazan was
charged with the loss for the
Rattlers.
He gave up seven hits, nine
runs, walked four and struckout
four. He was relieved by Cesar
Perez in the bottom of the
seventh. Perez struckout two
totters and gave up a base hit.
Danny Saverino booted Ray
Gonzalez home for the first
Tiger run on a base hit in the
first inning.
Bobby Garza sent the second
Tiger run in with a homer in the
third inning.
Ray Gonzalez slammed home
three runs off three hits.
