People and Places
By Tissa
Becky Garza has a lot to smile about these days.
Besides these trophies of which she is proud, she is
happy in her work as Maintenance Assistant "A" at
the Sun Gas Plant in Delmita. She started on the job as
the first female roustabout in Starr County about six
months ago and has also already progressed two steps,
first to maintenance assistant "B" and then to her
present position.
The trophies are reminders of her success this past
summer in the Rio Grande City Women's Softball
League. As First Base "Person" for the championship
Cow Girls team, Becky accumulated these trophies for
being on the championship team, being named all
tournament, and being Home Run Queen. She hit
eleven homers in nine games this past season.
Her co-workers at the gas plant were almost sorry
that she couldn't be on the company team which is an
all-male Slow Pitch league. They jokingly said that
girls are okay at the plant but that we're not ready for
girls on the baseball team yet.
They can't help but admire her prowess on a base
ball field or at work either, for whatever she does, she
seems to do it well. "I can't cook or sew," said Becky,
"but I can take an engine apart and put it back
together." A graduate of Huntingdon Beach High
School in California, she . studied Auto
Mechanics instead of Home Economics.
At Cypress Junior College In Golden West, she
studied the Police Sciences, but was unable to find law
enforcement work in Starr County when she moved
here with her parents last year. Both originally from
Rio Grande City, Mr. and Mrs. Ruben L. Garza, "Cono
and Tootsie," have six daughters, and Becky is the
second oldest. Cono is retired after twenty-three years
as a police officer in California. Of their married
daughters, one is in the Marine Corps and another
works in a Post Office. Three are in school here.
Becky took a job as a waitress at her aunt's
restaurant in Rincon, and it was here that workers
from the plant began kidding her about Equal Op-
portunity and about finding work at the plant. Later
they came seriously and offered her an application.
She filled it out on Wednesday, took her physical on
Friday, and started work on Monday, May 23,1977.
She commutes from Rio Grande City to her work
Monday through Friday from 7 to 3:30, has already
been sent to Lease Operators School in Corpus Christi
by the company, and has been learning "a little bit
about every thing. "'I love my work" she says, and
adds, "It's fun. I wouldn't trade it for anything in the
world. I like to work, and I like to be outside. In her
work, she can often be found repairing compressors
and such.
At twenty-one years old, her goals are for a lifetime
vocation with the oil company. She jokingly reports
that she aims to own it, but seriously plans to move up
to an Engine Operator's position or to be a Supervisor.
High hopes and hard work, that's what this girl is
made of.
