Screw worm Fighter
Praises Stockmen
p -5 -
The southwestern United States livestock
Industry is doing a good job of supporting
the Screwworm laboratory's surveillance
effort, says director Dr. James E. Novy.
Stockmen, veterinarians, and pet owners
3re now the first line of defense against this
parasite of all warm blooded animals, says
the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)
veterinarian. He explains that the
eradication fight is being carried on 100
miles and more south of the border in
Mexico against the most northerly known
population of screwworm flies.
"Vigilance and prompt submission of
worms found in any wound in any animal for
lab identification is essential if this pest is to
be kept out of the United States," says Novy.
"This is the only way the presence of
screwworms in the U.S. can be detected in
time to prevent a major outbreak."
No screwworms have been taken from
wounds in Texas animals since last Sep-
tember. The latest known U.S. infestations
were treated in two Arizona animals last
November.
A total of 138 worm samples had been
submitted to the labs for identification
through March 13 of this year. That total
compares to only 56 just one year earlier.
As part of the continuing effort to see that
no fertile flies escape from either the
research or production laboratories at
Mission, special teams have been searching
for possible "leaks." Duval County ra nch-
er, M.G. Forbes of Hebbronville, donated
two days of his time to help with this effort.
