Gladiators Gear Up
For Basketball Season
The Roma Gladiators, a perenni-
ally strong basketball team, will be
attempting this coming season to
regain the District 16-4A title that
they won in 1985-86.
Last year, the Gladiators finished
21-10 and in a tie for second place
with Edcouch-Elsa. When the two
teams played a playoff game for
the second-place state playoff
berth, the Yellowjackets won an
84-69 victory.
Gladiator Head Coach Jesus 0.
"Chuy" Guerra, Jr., said, "This
year, the teams in the district will
be even more balanced. Four or
five teams have a legitimate shot
at the title."
About the outlook for the
Gladiators, Guerra commented,
"We're going to have to outhustle
our opponents. We will have to be
extremely aggressive defensively,
and we'll have to rebound very
hard."
Guerra added, "If we're patient
enough and learn as we go along, I
feel we have a chance to be really
prepared for our district schedule
in January...Attitude has always
been one of our strengths. We play
together as a unit."
Guerra said, "We won't deviate
much from what we've done in the
past; pressure defense and a
running game on offense...We want
the game to be played at an
up-tempo level. If we can get into a

game like this, we have a better
chance of being successful."
The Gladiatois lost six seniors
from last year's team, but have
four lettermen returning. The lone
starter returning is senior center
Leonel Perez (5 feet, 11 inches).
Perez made the All-District team
In 16-4A last season, averaging 13
points and eight rebounds per
game. In the special playoff with
Edcouch-Elsa, he scored 29 points
and hauled down 12 rebounds.
Of Perez, Guerra said, "We need
leadership and rebounding from
him If he plays defense and
rebounds well, his points will come
in the flow of the offense."
This year, the coach indicated,
"We have a little bit more size. The
team will be a little bit taller,
hopefully, they will be just as
quick. We will have to move the
ball around offensively, and involve
as many players as we can."
The other three returning let-
termen from last year's team
include senior point guard Manuel
Alvarez (5 feet, 9 inches), senior
guard Isaac Garza (5 feet, 11
inches), and senior forward Bobby
Garcia (5feet, 11 inches).
Guerra commented about
Alvarez, "He was our sixth man
last year. We look for him to be our
leader on the court. He will be the
point guard, and play a big role in
the passing game. We'll need some
scoring from him; he has the
potential for that, but his main
responsibility will be to lead our
offense and defense on the court."
About guard Isaac Garza, the
coach said, "He's quick; he has a
chance to be our best defensive
player. He alternated with one of
the forwards last year. He's
probably our quickest player down
the court."
Guerra said of forward Bobby
Garcia, "We look for him to give us
defense and rebounding; those are
probably his strongest assets."
Other players on the varsity are
junior guard Omar Canales (5 feet,
11 inches), senior guard Frankie
Guerra (5 feet, 8 inches), junior
forward Gilberto Renteria (6 feet),
sophomore guard Ricardo Salinas
(5 feet, 7 inches), senior guard
Martin Canales (5 feet, 9 inches),
senior forward Pedro Alvarez "(6
feet), and junior forward Noel
Ramirez (5 feet, 10 inches).
About Omar Canales, a junior
guard coming up from the j.v.
team, Guerra commented, "His

strongest asset is his offensive
rebounding, and he has the
possibilities to develop into a fine
shooter."
Guerra commented that the
Gladiators will look for leadership
from Frankie Guerra, "and for him
to control our offense and defense
on the court." About Gilberto
Renteria, Guerra concluded that
"we will look for his rebounding."
The coach indicated that guard
Ricardo Salinas' passing skills
could be vital in the Roma offense.
Guerra said of Martin Canales,
"He's a hustler; he has an
excellent attitude."
Pedro Alvarez, said Guerra, will
be counted on to provide rebound-
ing strength, while Noel Ramirez
will be relied upon to strengthen
the inside game."
Guerra said, "I feel we have a
very challenging pre-district
schedule, with the majority of our
opponents being 5-A teams."
The Gladiators are tentatively
scheduled to being their season at
home on Tuesday, Nov. 17 against
Santa Rosa. They will play the Rio
Grande City Rattlers on the road
on Friday, Nov. 20.
Prior to beginning district play,
the Gladiators will compete in the
Raymondville tournament from
Nov. 27-28, the Sharyland tourna-
ment from Dec. 4-5, and the
Tuloso-Midway tournament from
Dec. 10-12.
The Gladiators will being their
District 16-4A campaign on the
road against Laredo Cigarroa on
Tuesday, Jan. 5. Their home
opener will be on Friday, Jan. 15
against the Mercedes Tigers.
Guerra said, "I see the district
being very even, balanced and
competitive."
He commented, "Raymondville
has some good athletes, Ed-
couch-Elsa has their top two
scorers back, and La Joya has
their whole team back. Los
Fresnos has one of the top players
in the district back in Wade
Salinas. Cigarroa always plays
good basketball, and Mercedes has
four starters back."
Guerra concluded, "We want the
gat to be played at an up-tempo
le\ If we can get into a game
like ihis, we have a better chance
of being successful."

Rattlers Gear Up
for Basketball
The Rio Grande City Rattler
varsity basketball team is gearing
up for the 1987-88 basketball
season, and hoping for significant
improvement from last season's
competitive but winless district
campaign.
Head Coach Ricardo Lopez
commented, "The overall attitude
of the team is very good. The kids
are very fired up; the 5-A thing is
behind them. Our attitude is the
best thing about the team right
now. The kids believe they can
surprise these teams...We'll pretty
much have a senior team."
Lopez noted that "most of the
games we lost last year were really
close."
About the District 31-5A basket-
ball outlook, Lopez commented,
"It's going to be a very strong
district."
Lopez pointed out, "Edinburg has
all five starters back, McAllen
Memorial four of five starters,
Laredo Martin four of five starters,
and Mission four of five starters."
He suggested that Laredo Nixon
and Laredo Martin could be better
than many people expect.
The coach predicted that in order
to be successful, the Rattlers are
"going to have to pressure the ball
the whole game, on offense and
defense. Last year, we did it off
and on. If we get into a half-court
game, we'll be at a disadvantage.
We'll just have to be more
aggressive on defense."
Lopez contended that the Rat-
tlers can have a solid 1987-88
season "if we execute the way we
should, both offensively and de-
fensively. We need to depend on
teamwork first."
'"'it Rattlers return five let-
te mi n from last year's team. The
tw star 3rs returning are senior
for\ ii.u Dave Jones (6 feet, l'/fc
inches) and senior forward-guard
LaloChapa (6feet, 1 inch).
Lopez commented about Jones
and Chapa, "Both him (Jones) and
Lalo got a lot of playing time in the
Summer Basketball League. They
made the All-Star team in the
summer; that did a lot to increase
their confidence. They're playing
with a lot of confidence; their
overall attitude is super."
About Jones, Coach Lopez said,
"At this moment, he is probably
our highest percentage shooter. He
can shoot from both the inside and
the outside."
Lopez said that Chapa "will
probably be the off-guard, our
shooting guard. He is a streak
shooter."
Other lettermen returning from
last year are senior guard Joe
Whatley (5 feet, 9 inches), senior
center Enrique Garcia (6 feet), and
senior forward Armando Lopez '6
feet).
Concerning the need for reboun-
ding. Lopez said that Jones, Lopez.
Garcia and senior center Ricardo
Gutierrez, Jr., (6 feet, 3 inches)
will be counted on to supply
consistent strength on the boards
Other seniors up from the junior
varsity are guard Richie Cantu (5
feet, 11 inches) and guard Horacio
Flores (5feet, 9inches).

Newcomers coming up from the
junior varsity are backup center
Luis Banda (6 feet, 2 inches),
forward Marin Lopez (6 feet, 2
inches), and forward Darrell
Earhart, Jr. (5feet, 10inches).
About Joe Whatley, Lopez said,
"He ended up starting toward the
end of the year; he did a good jo^>
against the zone defense. He has a
real good shot. We're hoping he can
grow in all aspects of the game."
Lopez indicated that Enrique
Garcia "is probably our most
consistent rebounder. He seems to
be around where the ball is. He
gets real good position on the
boards."
About Armando Lopez, the coach
noted that "he's coming off a kn<;e
injury. He's been working hard on
getting that knee strong. He saw
limited time last year; we brought
him along slowly."
The coach added that "hi§
(Lopez's) strong point will be on
the boards. He has a real good shot
around the basket."
Coach Lopez noted that center
Ricardo Gutierrez "played the last
two games with us (the varsity).
He did a real good job inside and
on the boards. We're looking for
him to be our center. With him at
center, Garcia will likely go to
power forward. He (Gutierrez) will
be around the basket most of the
time."
Lopez said that guard Richie
Cantu "will see some time at
guard. Defense is probably his
strongest point."
Lopez commented about guard
Horacio Flores, "We're looking for
him to be our point guard. He's
very quick and fast, and very good
at running the fast break."
The coach noted that last year
was the first year of significant
basketball experience for backup
center Luis Banda. Lopez said of
Darrell Earhart, "He'll be the
small forward. His strong points
should be rebounding and defense."
Lopez said that forward Marin
Lopez is a good shooter who also
played in the Summer Basketball
League and gained a lot of
confidence through that experi-
ence.
Lopez indicated, "We're trying to
pick up the tempo some. With our
height disadvantage, we'll have to
do a better job of running the fast
break."
On the positive side, said the
coach, "All the fuys have pretty
good on the court speed. Our big
kids can get down the court well
Our philosophy will be to run."
The Rattlers held scrimmages
against Mission, Zapata and Alice
in Mission this past Saturday. On
this coming Saturday, beginning at
10 a.m., the Rattler cagers will
scrimmage against Brownsville
Pace and La Joya.
The Rattlers will begin their
season at home on Tuesday, Nov.
17 against Zapata. They will play,
the Roma Gladiators at home on
Friday, Nov. 20. Prior to beginning
district play, the Rattlers wilj
compete in the Edinburg tourna:
ment from Pec 3-5, and the
Mercedea tournament from Dec.
17-19.
Rio will begin district play al
home on Tuesday, Jan 5 against
the Edinburg Bobcats.
The assistant coaches working
with Lopez will be Ludivico
Martinez and Richard Contreras.
