4-11 KRS HKLP JKRRY'S KIDS- These 4-H'ers from Starr Grande and Rio 4-11
"Iks participated in a bucket brigade to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy
Association recently. They collected $500 on a Saturday morning and added $25 to
that with a booth at the Jerry Lewis Telethon headquarters at Marco Gar/.a Chevrolet
where they sold sodas and homemade cupcakes. The check for $525 was presented to
Gigi Gutierrez, Starr County Chairperson for MDA, by the 4-H'ers
segment for Channel 4 TV's Telethon.
Bullock

President Roy Cantu suggested tfc t
Siarr County be designated as a
target area for state highway
assistanee because of its obvious
heavy traffic and need for greatly
expanded facilities.
Bullock responded, "Most of the
construction money in Texas is
going to highways...You need
someone from South Texas to serve
on the Highway Commission. It
has been 15 years (since Governor
Connally's administration) since
South Texas has been represented
on the Texas Highway
Commission."
Bullock concluded, "A lot of
people don't realize that the election
is six months off. Thai next
election will determine how you
live for the next 10 years. Seats for
Congress and the State Legislature
will be rcdistricted. 'I his will
determine how much federal funding
you will net."
alcohol abuse in 1980, and noted
that both his son and daughter are
recovering alcoholics. He stressed,
"You're looking at living proof that
a person can come back from the
dead"
Bullock contended, "We're
putting a lot of people in the state
penitentiary who can be treated in
restitution centers and boot camps
for their illnesses. We need to put
money into schools to help
students who are abusing drugs."
He stressed, "You can only build
so many cells. We need to go to the
root of the problem. It costs S4100
per year to give a child in Texas a
first class education. It costs
S25.000 a year to house, feed, and
clolhc a prisoner at Huntsville.
Education and rehabilitation can and
will work."
At the same time, Bullock
suggested, "Taxing drugs has
worked well in other states. Law
enforcement officers need all the
help that they can gel."

After his remarks
Rotarians, Bullock told
Grande Herald that he
optimistic about the progress of his
campaign. He said, "I have the
endorsement of 64 of 91
Democratic state representatives and
17 of 23 Democratic state
senators."
He predicted, "You'll have the
hottest Democratic primary in a
long time." He also suggested that
Texas Republicans are likely to
have divisive and even rancorous
primary battles.
Bullock has served as
Comptroller of Texas since 1975.
Prior to that, he served as Secretary
of Slate.
DISCOVER AMERICA TRIP- Over 80 Starr County 4-H'ers and Adult Leaders
traveled to Floria this summer as part of the club's Discover America Citizenship
Project. Traveling in two chartered buses, the group stayed in Louisiana one night
going and coming from Florida aross the southern states of Louisiana, Mississippi,
and Alabama. While in the Orlando area, they spent a day at Disney world in the
Magic Kingdom, touring Future World and the World Showcase, a day at Epcot
Center, and a day touring NASA, where they saw the space shuttle Columbia on its
launch pad ready for blastoff. The youth raised funds for their educational and fun
trip by holding various barbecues and raffles. They are appreciative of the support of
the entire community in supporting these fundraisers.
