Managing Editor
Under the guidance of a new
coach, the Rio Grande City
Rattlers are enthu: iastically
preparing for the 2006 football
season with high hopes they can
leapfrog most of their District
30-5A opponents and achieve a
state playoff berih.
Jesus Lozano was named the
new Rattler head coach in
December 2005. Lozano has
coached in the Rattler football
program for 20 years and has
served on the varsity staff for 16
years. He served as the Rattlers
offensive coordinator from 1998-
2002.
Lozano emphasized, "This is
exciting. I've been waiting for
thjs opportunity for a long
time...I believe we have a good,
dedicated and knowledgeable staff
that will help get the program
on a winning track."
The new Rattler skipper
insisted. "I believe we can make
an impact this coming year. The
kids believe they can win this
year and are going to win...The
team is very united and is
showing strong commitment
and good spirit."
I "Morale is very high,"
continued Lozano. "We had a
tbugh and rigorous offseason
that will prepare everybody well.
We did a lot of teaching during
the offseason. Everybody is
Ipoking forward to the coming
season with a lot of confidence.
It (winning) comes through hard
\lork, dedication and
commitment."
• Lozano stressed. "I have high
expectations for the Rattlers this
year. Other teams should not
take us lightly. We'll need to
stay healthy. We'll need to
execute efficiently on both
offense and defense. We'll need
tp avoid mistakes. We'll need to
play smart, mistake-free
football."
1 About the offensive outlook,
the coach emphasized. "We're
planning on bringing back the
Slot-T offense that we ran for
most of the I990's. It's a ball-
control offense that depends on
execution. It can be and
frequently is a big play offense.
We will throw the football, but
we will basically be a running
team."
Lozano commented, "Coach
(Abel) Gonzalez, our new
offensive coordinator, will be a
big asset to the offense and the
overall program." Gonzalez was
a record-setting quarterback for
the Rattlers from 1996-1998 and
for the Texas A&M-Kingsville
Javelinas from 1999-2002.
The coach added, "We will run
some option. We will take what
the opposing defense gives us.
Our offense will be all about
execution."
In its 2006 preview edition.
Texas Football magazine
indicated that the Rattlers return
eight starters from 2005. with
three on offense and five on
defense. Lozano indicated. "The
offense returns five players who
saw significant starting duty last
year."
Sophomore R.J. Alaniz (175
pounds) is projected as the
starter at quarterback. Lozano
stressed, "He's showing a lot of
poise and potential. He has great
feet, a great arm, and good
speed. He can be a threat both
running and passing. We expect
him to be our starter. He has
extraordinary passing ability."
Juniors Mike Perez (160) and
Lucas Zarate (130) are available
for duty at quarterback. Lozano
remarked about Perez, "He's
very dedicated and is a hard
worker. We feel he can run the
offense." He evaluated Zarate as
"very quick and agile; he has a
decent arm and has lots of
quickness."
Senior Leo Lopez (175)
returns with two years of
experience at halfback. Texas
Football indicated that Lopez
gained '200 yards rushing in
2005. Lozanp commented, "He
has good vision, good speed and

An historic grave lies within the proposed right of
way for the US 83 highway expansion project being
undertaken by the Texas Department of Transpor-
tation. The grave is located on the east side of US
83 and just south of Arroyo de los Mudos, approxi-
mately 6 miles north of Rama-Los Saenz, Texas. Evi-
dence suggests there is a single isolated grave that
is approximately 65 years old, and the person bur-
ied in the grave hasbeen tentatively identified as a
man named Severo Guerra. There are no official
records of a cemetery ever having existed at this
location, but some informants suggest that there
may be more than one grave at this location.
Anyone who has any information about graves or a
historic cemetery near this location is encouraged

sociates, Inc. (cultural resources contractor for

tremendously fast. He was a
district champion in track this
spring. He saw some playing
time at receiver (in 2005). We
will utilize him both as a
running back and receiver. We
will try to isolate him and get
him in one-on-one situations."
In 2005, Garza caught a 38-yard
scoring pass against Roma and
contributed a 44-yard reception
against McAllen Memorial.
Of the wide receivers, senior
Javier Garza (140) has the most

potential. He's showing

the backbone of the offensive

very dedicated as a group,"
stressed the Rattler skipper.
"They worked hard during the
summer. Our linemen have a lot
of responsibilities in this
offense."
Concerning the defense,
Lozano emphasized, "We will
have an aggressive, tenacious,
swarming type of defense. Roy
Pena will be our defensive
coordinator. He comes from
Sharyland and has a lot of
experience."
The coach continued, "We
will run a 53-stack defense as
our base defense. That defense is
typically strong against the run.
We will blitz when the situation
calls for it. We hope to create a
lot of turnovers. This defense
typically utilizes a lot of
blitzing."

with senior free safety Jesus
Martinez (155) and senior
