RGC native serving as congressional intern
Rio Grande City native Betsy Rene Chapa, pictured above, is currently serving a fall 2006 internship
in Washington, D.C. She is spending the semester as an essential part of U.S. Representative Ralph
Hall's legislative team. She is one of 15 students chosen for a congressional internship through the
Agricultural and Natural Resources Policy Internship Program (ANRP) at Texas A&M University
Betsy, the daughter of Alberto and Elisa Chapa of Rio Grande City, is a 2003 graduate of Rio Giandc
City High School and is scheduled to graduate from Texas A&M University in December 2006.
RGC High School graduate
chosen to work in Washington
Betsy Chapa, a 2003 graduate
of Rio Grande City High School
and an Agricultural
Development major at Texas
A&M University in College
Station, recently began a fall
2006 internship in Washington,
DC. Betsy will spend the
semester as an integral part of
U.S. Representative Ralph
Hall's legislative team.
Betsy is one of 15 students
selected for a congressional
internship through the
Agricultural and Natural
Resources Policy Internship
Program (ANRP) at Texas
A&M University. Her duties
include monitoring legislation,
attending committee hearings
and briefings, preparing reports,
and researching and responding
to constituent reports.
Betsy is the daughter of
Alberto and Elisa Chapa of Rio
Grande City.
"This internship is a win-win
experience for both our students
and our legislators. ANRP
interns provide valuable
assistance to their employers,
specifically on agricultural and
natural resource issues. In
addition, the leadership skills
and work experience interns gain
is invaluable when searching for
a job after graduation," explains
Dr. Elsa Murano, Vice
Chancellor and Dean for
Agriculture and Life Sciences at
Texas A&M University.
The program is in its 16th
year of sending students to
Washington, D.C. to work in
congressional offices and
committees. Since its inception
in 1990, more than 500 Aggies
have worked on Capitol Hill
through the program.
Each student receives course
credit for their internship as well
as a $2500 scholarship.
Scholarships are provided by
private donors and commodity
organizations, such as the Texas
Farm Bureau, Plains Cotton
Growers, Inc., and the South
Texas Cotton and Grain
Asociation.
Betsy Renee Chapa is a senior
Agricultural Leadership and
Development major from Rio
Grande City. She previously
served as the vice president of
communications for the
AgForLife student association.
She also enjoys giving back to
her community, participating in
food drives, Christmas drives,
and the Aggie Relay For Life
with the American Cancer
Society.
She will be graduating from
Texas A&M University in
December 2006. Betsy hopes to
attend either St. Mary's or Texas
Tech University in the fall of
2007, specializing in family law
or medical malpractice.
While in Washington she will
be working with Congressman
Ralph Hall. Betsy is interested
in policies relating to drug
safety, public health, air quality
and environmental health. One
of the quotes she admires most
is this David Frost statement,
"Don't aim for success if you
want it; just do what you love
and believe in, and it will come
naturally."

South Texas College helps
thousands of students apply and
accept financial aid awards
every semester, but there are
still many more sUidents that are
not taking advantage of this
opportunity. In order to help
more current and potential
students .understand financial
aid, how to apply and what the
various aid opportunities are.
South Texas College is hosting a
Financial Aid Fair on
Wednesday, Oct. 25 from 8 a.m.
8 p.m. at its Starr County
Campus in Rio Grande City at
the Student Services Building.
"We hope that students will
get a leg up on financial aid for
the spring and summer
semesters," said Ruben Saenz,
site coordinator for the Starr
County Campus. "We also want
to educate people about the
process. People tend to think
that financial aid is a scary word
and it's not. Financial aid is the
way that the state and

everyone. If you may be
interested in attending college or
continuing your education, I
really urge you to come in and f|
see what aid is available to you. ^
You never know what you might
be eligible for unless you
apply."
All student services offices
will be open during the fair
including registration, testing,
advising, counseling and
cashiers. Those interested in
applying for aid should bring a
copy of their 2005 tax return, or
if a dependent, a parent's 2005
tax return. A parent's signature
is required for dependents. Also,
it is recommended that those
interested in applying for aid
bring a copy of their social
security card, a state issued ID,
driver's license or resident alien
card and proof of othrr income
benefits.
"There are several types of
financial aid, not just loans,
although that is one
component," added Saenz.
"Students can also be eligible
for grants and student worker
jobs. Just come to the fair and
sec what we can do for you."
