Upstate Baptists visit Remolino, other churches
A group of 31 Baptist volunteers from North and East Texas visited Starr County from June 16-22 to
help with Bible Schools at churches in Garceno and Roma. They also carried out some renovation
work at Primera Iglesia Bautista in Remolino, which is pictured above. The group was led by Roland
Ouellette, pastor of East Sherman Baptist Church in Sherman, Texas. Ouellette was pastor of first
Baptist Church in Rio Grande City from 1980-2000 and played a crucial role in the Remolino church s
development over the years.

A former Rio Grande City
pastor helped lead a group of
over 30 volunteers that assisted
with Bible schools and other
missions work at Baptist
churches in the western area of
Starr County from Sunday, June
17 through Thursday, June 21.
Roland Ouellette served as
pastor of First Baptist Church of
Rio Grande City from October
1980 until February 2000, or for
almost 19 1/2 years. Since
February 2000, he has been
pastor of East Sherman Baptist
Church in Sherman, Texas,
located in North Texas just
south of the Oklahoma border.
Ouellette noted that a group of
31 volunteers from churches in
Sherman, Houston, Tyler and
Minden, Louisiana arrived in
Starr County on Saturday
evening, June 16. He explained,
"We're here doing Bible Schools
in Garceno and Roma. We're
staying here at Primera Iglesia
Bautista of Remolino."
Remolino is located
approximately six to seven
miles west of Rio Grande City
on U.S. Highway 83.
Ouellette recalled that First
Baptist Church-RGC has a long
history of involvement with the
Remolino church. He noted that
he and his wife, Gail, "bought
this property in June 1977. We
gave the deed to First Baptist of
RGC in the fall of that year."
Ouellette added, "The church
adopted it (Remolino) as one of
its missions projects a few
months later. Construction
began in the summer of 1978."
He noted that Israel Cortez
"has been pastor of this church

Born in Oaxaca in 1883
; Garcia Nurtez dedicated 64
years of his life to art. In 1901
• • he began studies at Mexico's
renowned San Carlos Academy,
. where Diego Rivera started
three years earlier. Garcia Nufiez
studied under the great deaf-
mute portraitist German
Gedovius and the Catalan
painter Antonio Fabres. new to
the faculty, who was
experimenting with ways to
bring photographic realism to
still life painting Inspired by the
ideas of Fabres, Garcia Nufiez
took to painting landscapes.
He had his first exhibits in
1907 and 1909. and in 1911 he
showed a notable collection of
small canvases at the Academy.
Interim Mexican president
Francisco Leon de la Barra
awarded him a grant to study in
Europe. During this period he
produced some oils that were
altered to mimic the signature of
noted Mexican landscape painter
Jose Maria Velasco. Garcia
Nufiez spent time in Barcelona,
Madrid and Paris before
returning in 1913 to Mexico in
the midst of the Revolution.
In sharp contrast to the
vanguard Mexican painters of
his era, Garcia Nufiez professed
an art-for-art's-sake credo, "I
have no faith in paintings whose
emphasis is on their subject
matter. The lineage of every
good painting is purely
aesthetic; everything else is
mere rhetoric or chatter." For
30 years he taught anatomical
drawing and imitation at the
National Preparatory School. He
produced 15,000 paintings in his
long and prolific career. His
paintings have recently been
sold at auction by Christie's and
Sotheby's.

Coordinator, Starr County
Campus
Over a year ago I invited a
group of Starr County residents
and a STC history instructor to
join me in forming the "Starr
County Historical Sites
Committee." Starr County has a
rich history and it is important
that present and future
generations of Starr County
residents know about it and
come to appreciate it.
This being the over-arching
premise the committee identified
ten historical sites. Other sites
can be identified in the future.
Through the assistance of
committee members and STC's
media department, a picture of
each site was obtained, enlarged,
and framed. The framed
pictures range from 34" X 40"
to 40" X 50."
The collection of pictures will
be on display for the first time
this Thursday evening. The
presentation will begin at 6:00
p.m., with a thirty-minute
program in the auditorium.
Here the purpose of the display
will be explained, the committee
introduced, a power point

falls on men however they act;
but I do believe in a fate that
falls on man unless they act.

presentation will take place
which includes a picture of the
picture to be hung on the
hallway wall, and a brief
summation of the historical
significance of the each
historical site will be presented
by committee members.
Immediately afterwards (6:30
p.m.), the program moves to the
middle of the first floor hallway
of Building E where the actual
picture of each historical site,
accompanied by a brief a write-
up, will be on display This will
be a permanent display at the
Starr County Campus
We believe that the Starr
County Historical Sites display
will be welcomed and
appreciated by the students,
faculty, staff, and the Starr
County community and that it
will enhance the Starr County
Campus environment.
You are invited to the
presentation, firing a friend.
since 1983."
Construction work on the
Remolino church was completed
in the spring of 1985. The
construction efforts were carried
out with the physical and
financial assistance of many
upstate Texas Baptists from
different churches. Several out-of
state "Winter Texans" also
played significant roles in the
construction.
Ouellette pointed out that
Primera Iglesia Bauiista-
Remolino, after being sponsored
by First Baptist-RGC for more
than a decade, became its own
autonomous church in the early-
to-mid-1990's.
"The area out in Remolino
has really grown," stressed
Ouellette. "...I've seen a lot of
changes in the community with
a lot of new homes and
businesses. There's obviously
been tremendous progress and
growth in Rio Grande City."
Ouellette noted, "We're
working at Iglesia Bautista
Emmanuel in Garceno in the
mornings. We're working at
Primera (Iglesia Bautista) in
Roma in the afternoons We're
doing some remodeling work at
the Remolino church."
He stressed. "The week has
gone well...We've been able to
accomplish pretty much what
we desired. God has been good
to us...One of our group did
have an unfortunate leg fracture
and had to be hospitalized."
The pastor emphasized,
"We're planning on coming
back next year."
Ouellette commented. "The
church in Sherman is going very
well. It's a very loving,
mission-minded church. I'm
enjoying the ministry there: I do
miss the Valley."
The Ouellettes' service in
Starr County originated with a
mission trip to Falcon Heights
in 1974. They arrived in Roma
in August 1976 to work i'jj 11 -
time as volunteer missionaries
