Lady Rattlers boost record to
24-1 by trouncing Memorial
By ROEL OLSON, JR.
The Rio Grande City Lady
Rattler softball team continued to
roll last week with an 11-1
trouncing of the McAilen Memorial
Lady Mustangs.
Tlie Lady Rattlers, ranked seventh
in the state rankings, were led by
the superb pitching of Jenny
Vasquez. and Jessica Garcia as they
eliminated the Lady Mustangs from
A any playoff hopes with an 11-1
victory.
Vasquez picked up her 100th
strikeout of the year when the
struck out the Mustangs' No. 3
battler on a full count strike. In the
process, Jenny nailed down her 16th
win without a loss. Tired after
placing first in the Rattler Track
0 Relays in the pole vault with a
vault of 10 feet, she mustered
enough energy to throw four solid
innings.
Vasquez informed me that she
was through for the night, and
Jessica Garcia came in to shut down
Memorial for the last three innings.
Both Vasquez and Garcia picked up
four strikeouts apiece.
Lilly Flores, Monica Alvarez and
Garcia provided the offense for Rio
with two hits apiece. Vasquez
helped herself out with a double arid
Pam Alaniz ripped a triple with m
runners on in the seventh inning.
Rio had a makeup game
scheduled on April 12 in La Joya
and was scheduled to host McAilen

H-E-B reopens Crystal City store;
offers support to Piedras Negras
(Crystal City, TX) - At 7 a.m.
this morning, the doors opened on
the H-E-B Crystal City Store.
While some adjustments had to be
made due to the ongoing work on
the most heavily damaged parts of
the store, shoppers experienced a
new store layout including new
registers and a relocated Business
Center. "While we hadn't planned
on a store remodel at this time,"
said Jeff Thomas, Senior Vice
President/General Manager of the
South Texas Region said, "We
couldn't miss the opportunity to
refresh this great store."
The severe storms that dropped
hail and rain on Sunday caused the
collapse of a portion of the roof.
Although no one was seriously
injured, the damage affected an
area of the store that measured
approximately 50' x 50'.
And while responding to the
misfortune at their Crystal City
store, H-E-B also responded to the
tragedy which occurred to our
neighbors across the Border in
Piedras Negras, Mexico. Product,
including food, cleaning supplies,
and infant needs, was provided
along with water, rice, and the
blemished product from our Costal
City Store that could be donated to
help in the relief efforts. H-E-B
toured the area and met with
officials in Piedras Negras
including Enrique Martinez,
Governor of Coahuila, and Claudio
Bress, Mayor of Piedras Negras.
The contribution was overseen
by Marissa Faz-Torres, Director of
the Food Bank in Acuna, Mexico.
In all, H-E-B has contributed

maker Gerald S.
It looks like the only alterna-
| tive to this week's R rated ac-
tion movie premieres is Connie
and Carta, directed by former
comedic actor Michael Lem-
beck. this comedy doesn't look
very "family friendly" but it
looks like it might have a few good laughs Plus it
stars former X-files star David Duchovney who's
performances I have always enjoyed So if you
don't feel like a violence packed action film this
week you might consider watching this one with a
few friends who feel the same way, don't expect to
see many guys in the audience
Also opening this weekend ts yet another movie
based oil a comic book super hero, The Punisher.
director Jonathan Hensleigh's directorial debut
Hensleigh has written the screenplay for several
excellent action films such as Armageddon, and
Con Air, so he's proven himself to be a good story
teller. His skills as a writer impress me enough to
want to see this film, however this week I think my
$10.00 worth of gas will be well spent driving to the
theater to see director Quentin Terantino's latest
Gerald's Pick: Quentin Terantino's Kill Bill
Vol 2. If you saw Vol. 1, then you know to expect
ihis film to be very violent, which is common of
Terantino films. However something that is also
common in his films is very interesting and very
well developed characters which are backed by
great performances from recognizable actors from
some of our favorite films and even television
shows 1 look forward to seeing how this story con-
cludes
