The publishers agreed to do It with
the result that by so doing they con
trlbuted toward quieting the more
excitable and hysterical of the
populace. After the arrlvsl of Gen-
eral Villa It was discovered that the
anywhere from four to twenty troop
trains which were on their way to-
ward Juares were almply five or poa-
albly els train loads of cotton which
had been aetaed at Torreón and which
was being brought to (he border to
if sold and that Instead of a grout
army he brought a guard of lb men.

The excitement did much to
stimulate the trade of firearms und
ammunition and deapltn the fact that
it Is contrary to the laws of Texas to
ell platola to anyone or rifles or
ehotguns to stranger every ammuni-
tion dealer In KI Paao sold out long
.before night. The run on the arms
and ammunition houses began shortly
after noon mid the city and council of
ficials got together to formulate a re-
quest upon those dealera that no fire-
arms or ammunition of any kind be
old to any person not having a per
mil to own and carry such arms
signed by Hherlff Peyton F. Rdwarrin
This tended In a measure to leasen the
outward flow of ahootlng Irons but
did not atop it. Hundreds of ap
pi lean ta fur permits were refused at
the Hherlff' Office
aUudua of Women and Children.
One of the effects of 4he excite-
ment was to cause scores of men to
hurry their wives and children to
points In the north and east where
they might have relatives In order
to get them out of the danger aone.
Every train leaving KI Paso east west
or north last night was crowded to
the limit and many carried extra
PiUlrnurm. exhausting the equipment
of that company In Rl Paso. The
publication of General Villa's state-
ment however had ' a tendency to
stem the outward tide of travel. Many
who contemplated evacuating changed
their mind upon reading Villa' Inter-
view. Army PTrnarrd for TrowWe.
At Fort Hilas the rumors of the ap-
proach of anywhere from 400 Otu 16.-
000 seasoned constitutionalist aoldlsrs
caused the commander to prepare for
eventualities to ths extent of having
every cavalry horse or artillery mule
hod and every auldler and officer
called to quart era A squadron of the
Twelfth cavalry a battalion of the
Twentieth Infantry and a battery of
the Hixth Plehl artillery were ordered
to proceed from Fort Hitas to Rl Paso
