Crusader baseball starts slow, bounces back
Squad opens season with loss, then sweeps doubleheader

Letourneau 15 UD 11
The Crusaders started the
2003 season in unexpected fash-
ion, allowing six runs and com-
mitting two errors in the first
inning of play.
The squad battled back, tak-
ing the lead at three different
points, but in the end, shaky
pitching and defense were too
much for the Crusaders to over-
come at the plate.
The offensive explosion was
keyed by the middle of the
lineup, notably junior leftfielder
Matt Heinritz and sophomore
designated hitter Cole Monreal.
Heinritz provided three hits
and a walk at the plate, scoring
three times.
Monreal also produced with
three hits, all doubles, and five
runs batted in.
Also making an impact at the
plate were junior centerfielder
Brian Spinner and junior short-
stop Bobby Houston with two
hits apiece.
Overall, the Crusaders had 15
hits, as eight of the nine offen-
sive starters had at least one hit.
UD 7 Letourneau 6
In the first game of Saturday's
doubleheader, the Crusaders
overcame another shaky first in-
ning to garner their first win of
the season.
Freshman pitcher Coleman
Moore walked two batters and
allowed a homerun in the first
inning to give the Yellowjackets
a 3-0 lead.
The Crusaders battled back
again as Moore settled into a
comfort zone on the mound in
the second, third, and fourth in-
nings while the Crusaders were
again solid at the plate.
Moore left the game with a
5-3 lead, two outs and two run-
ners on base in the top of the fifth
inning, but freshman reliever
Daniel Gable was unable to stop
the Letourneau rally as the
Yellowjackets took the lead 6-5
before Gable recorded the
inning's final out.
In the bottom half of the fifth,
senior third baseman Greg
Sommers manufactured the ty-
ing run by earning a walk, steal-
ing two bases and scoring on a
balk.
In the sixth, the Crusaders
broke the tie with a two out rally,
concluding in a bases loaded
walk to senior catcher Adrian
Cantu, allowing sophomore
rightfielder Mayan Corioso to
score the winning run.
Gable held onto the lead by
retiring the Yellowjackets in or-
der in the seventh inning, clinch-
ing the win for the Crusaders.
After struggling in the fifth,
Gable turned in a dominant per-
formance on the mound m the
sixth and seventh innings, strik-
ing out two and holding
Letourneau scoreless to record
the first win of his collegiate
career.
UD 3 Letourneau 2
In the rubber match of the
three-game series, the Crusaders
benefited greatly from an excel-
lent pitching performance by
freshman John Seaman.
Seaman was dominant, giv-
ing the squad a complete game
performance in his first colle-
giate outing.
The Crusaders jumped out of
the gate offensively, scoring
three runs in the game's first
three innings but cooled off as
the game wore on.
Taking a 3 -1 lead into the sev-
enth and final inning, Seaman
ran into trouble when
Letourneau loaded the bases
with no outs.
After allowing one run to
score, the Crusaders squashed
the Letourneau rally with a pair
of defensive gems.
First, second baseman Austin
Rahn snagged a line drive and
raced to tag second base for the
force out and unassisted double
play.
With two outs and runners on
first and third, Seaman induced
a ground ball back to the mound.
Seaman was unable to field
the ball cleanly as the elusive
ground ball popped out of his
glove and toward home plate.
Scrambling for the out, Sea-
man fielded the ball and threw
from his knees to Monreal out-
stretched at first base. The play
resulted in the game's final out,
clinching a sweep of the double-
header for the Crusaders.

Junior pitcher Mike Anderson delivers a pitch in Friday's
season opener against Letourneau. After allowing a six-
run first inning to the Yellowjackets, Anderson bounced
back to baffle hitters through four scoreless innings in the
15-11 Crusader loss.
