Ambassador speaks at Rome Campus
by Anton Hartman
Contributing Writer
The Holy See and the United
States government are in
agreement that war is always a
means of last resort, the U.S.
ambassador to the Holy See said
in a speech on the Rome campus
recently.
Speaking was James
Nicholson, who is slated to be
the 2003 Constantin
commencement speaker next
month.
Pope John Paul II, however,
has stated his opposition to the
war publicly even as the United
States and Great Britain have
attacked Iraq
During his talk, Nicholson
spoke about such subjects as the
current war in Iraq, his job, the
current state of the Church, and
U.S. relations with the Vatican
past and present. He told the
crowd that filled the Aula Magna
on the Rome campus that the
Catholic Church has faced
similar sets of problems to those
it faces today, and it has always
been able to overcome them.
The post Sept. 11 reaction of
the Pope and also the Papal
comments and position on the
potential war were key issues
addressed when Nicholson
presented his credentials to the
Holy Father Sept. 13, 2001
During that meeting the Pope
told Nicholson the terrorist

attacks in New York and
Washington were attacks not just
on the United States but on the
whole world.
The Ambassador reported a
meeting between an envoy from
the Pope and President George
W. Bush in the Oval Office
March 5. Bush responded to the
Vatican's concerns by saying
that Iraq poses such a grave
threat to the United States that
he was forced to go to war unless
Iraq complied with the United
Nations directives.
Nicholson compared the
Pope to a moral megaphone. He
also pointed out the overlap
between American values and
the values of the Holy See.
"The shared values are such
fundamental beliefs as the
primacy of the individual and the
dignity and basic individual
rights that all men have,"
Nicholson said.
Before Bush appointed him
ambassador in August of 2001,
Nicholson graduated from the
United States Military Academy
at West Point, completed a
military career, and retired from
the Army Rangers as a Full
Colonel. He was also a lawyer
in Colorado, a businessman in
the housing industry, and former
Chairman of the Republican
National Committee.
Nicholson wrote a book on
the history of the relationship
between the U.S. and the Holy
See, published last year.
