Effective Schools -they have been studied and analyzed. Numerous articles and books have
been written in which the correlates of effective schools were examined. At Tarleton State
University, through the Effective Schools Project, presenters over the past eight years have
examined those correlates. Concepts such as quality schools, accelerated schools, and
performance-based schools have intrigued many of us as we have fit the various elements into
our school experiences.
Levine and Lezotte (1990), in an analysis and discussion of key correlates, note that effective
schools in general rank high on the effective school correlates. They also note that, while there
are potentially many approaches which might prove successful for improving school
achievement, an isolated emphasis on one element is unlikely to produce higher achievement
in the absence of other correlates. It is as though the individual elements are pieces-pieces
of a puzzle.
The ESP Journal is an avenue for school districts to share success stories and to highlight their
accomplishments. With this, the third publication of the ESP Journal, we again spotlight
schools that have added puzzle pieces to shape student success and increase student
achievement. In the articles that follow, schools identify some of the successful approaches
that have added more pieces to their student success. When the pieces fit for an individual
school, they do so because of the nature of that school-the shared vision and commitment
to improving student achievement. And while many of the authors of the articles focus on
only one piece of the success, the forces in a school interact. As we share some of those pieces
with you, we begin to investigate not only how the pieces fit together, but also how they
