pus. Teachers and students en-
couraged each other to save money
in an effort to prepare their com-
munity of learners for the future.
The GRIS and American State
Bank partnership has been suc-
cessful as student accounts grow
larger than the GRIS branch can
manage from the general Ameri-
can State Bank school account.
The GRIS bank opens each Friday
from 7:30AM-8:15AM in the
school lobby. As a result, when a
student's line item account ex-
ceeds $25.00, ASB invites parents/
guardians to visit the bank and
open an individual savings account
for their student. Usually new sav-
ings accounts entail a $100.00 de-
posit, but ASB waives this require-
ment for GRIS partners.

Naim Soler (4th grade): "I help
at my mom 's work to get money.
I am saving for college. "
Citlally Espino (3rd grade):
"My whole family gives me mon-
ey because they want me to save
for college. "
Tatutm Stegint (4th grade): "I
think this is a really really nice
because it will help me with my
future. I put my birthday and
chore money in my account. "
The student bank tellers were
asked, "What have you liked about
being a bank teller?" Their re-
sponses reflected their pride in the

volunteer, reported that the ASB
Intermediate School bank was an
excellent introduction to banking.
Student customers are not only
learning how a savings account
works, but also the discipline it
takes to successfully save money.
The student tellers are learning
much as well. Student bank tellers
must be honest and courteous. De-
velopment of these two character
traits can help them succeed in
future employment opportunities.

the need to teach financial literacy
