DON'T DO IT SAL, I AIN'T
DEAD.
America-1 (t a.) I'f|iuhlican.
We have heard a good one from
the Aiapaha which is vouched for us
true. An old man was going to
town to make some needed purchase
for his farm, and his old Imlv ^fave
him a lot of eggs and some other lit-
tle articles to sell, ami a list ol things
for him to purchase in return. The
old gcut got to town, and concluded
he'd take a drap. before he did any-
thing else, and made lor the bar-
room. While he was at the bar
some friends stepped up and lie had
to treat, and. to make the story
short, got lieustly drunk without
buying a single thing, Wio-igh In-
got rict rff his old woman's eggs and
other "truck." Lute al uigiit he
drove up to his gate, or hi.* team
stopped at the gate, ami tin- old lady
came out, saw hi* condition, gentl\
assisted htin from the wagon and to
the house, returned, unhitched the
feain. fed them and returned to the
house. Here she found her old man
{iretty drunk, helped him oft with
lis clothing, got a sheet and sewed
it around him. then gave him a good
thrashing. The old fellow- sw ore and
begged at a terrible rate, but he w.i*
not turned loose until he hail prom-
ised to do so no more. The oi l man
lelt that ho was disgraced, and n< xt
morning went dow n to the river t<<
drown himself. Ou the river bank-
he sat down and wrote a long hire-
well iu the aan4, threw oil ins hat
and coat, jumped into a skill and
nulled to the other side, where In
hid in the weeds and bushes and
awaited developments. Late in the
afternoon his old woman went dow n
to the river searching for him. His
hat and coat were soon found aud
Ihen the writing in the sand. Al-
ter reading it she had an hysterical
attack, she jumped up ami veiled,
knelt down and tried to pray, and
called for "darling .lake to come back
to her out of the cold water, and
she'd never lieat him so again.' At
last becoming frantic' she jelled.
,vDear Juke. I'll drown too," and
made n rush lor the water. The old
man thought she might perish, if she
made the leap, before he could row
over, rose up and yelled. "Hold on
(bar, Sal! Don't do it Sal. I ain't
dead yet, just wait till I get thar,"
and when he rowed swittly over the
ttaaiMvaud reaching the bank, the
two were quickly locked iu each oth-
ers arms, aud swor they would live

bodj was ionud aud Johnston was|
arretted. To his surprise, and that
of one o| the n -groea who filled the
court room, lie was found guilty and
sentenced t<> be hanged on Nov. tio.
Ills astonishment at this result was
largely due to the fact that he had
procured from the conjurer a charm
warrunted to protect him from till
punishment for his crime. H•• still I

the gallows, la-nig established in
