? On hit passage towards the place he met with with the Command-
ant General of the Californias at Soledad- to whom he delivered
hi* passport and papers- The General then altered his passport
and jpurnished him a letter to Dan Louis at San Francisco
to which place he accordingly proceeded gave his letter and
passport- was told he was at liberty but after several attempts
was denied any pass port at all
Finding it impossible to procure subsistence or necessary
money to reach home he left the place without a passport at
the peril of his life and though frequently threatened on his
passage succeeded in reaching Santa Barbara wishing to reach
San Gabriel where he hoped to get sufficient to live upon
till an opportunity might offer of returning to his countyy
At Santa Barbara met with the General and after informing him
of his not being able to procure a passport at San Francisco
was provided with one to San Gabriel to which place he proceeded
and after remaining there some time and much disappointed in
hie hopes of a livelihood he returned to this place where he
was informed that a good subsistence might be obtained
/ From which place your petitioner being an American
Citizen requests your attention to his case, if that any releif
it may be in your power to procure him may afford him some
reparation for the barbarous treatment ha has received when
unavoidably thrown hare by distress and loss and in duty bound
will ever pray affirming before the undersigned that what is
written above is shrictly and faitfully true-.-
