Henderson de feats Sheri Butcher in
heavy Republican primary voting
An unprecedented turnout in early Re-
publican primary voting and crossover poll-
ing by Democrats proved to be key
elements in former Texas Ranger Gary
Henderson's successful bid to unseat
two-term Hemphill County Sheriff Dean
Butcher Tuesday evening.
A total of 1,162 voters turned out for ei-
ther the Republican or Democratic pri-
mary this week—more than 50% of the
registered voters in Hemphill County Most
of the ballots were cast in the Republican
primary, which featured the hotly con-
tested race for State Senator, and locally,
the face-off between Butcher and
Henderson.
The Sheriff's race was a close one
throughout the evening as the two candi-
dates traded leads. With the early vote
count still underway and all precincts re-
porting, Henderson owned only a slim
9-vote lead over the incumbent. Three elec^
tion workers pored over 381 early ballots
for almost eight hours before reporting to
the District Clerk's office.
That voting was decisive, however, with

votes
cast for Henderson and 173 for Butcher,
giving the challenger a 40-vote victory with
582 total votes over Sheriff Butcher's 542.
In the absenee of a Democratic challenger,
and barring the appearance of a write-in
candidate, Henderson's four-year term will
begin in January 2005.
Butcher was first appointed Sheriff in
July of 1997 when his predecessor, Billy
Bowen, died following a long battle with
cancer. Butcher had served as Bowen's
Chief Deputy for thirteen years, prior to
which he had a 17-year stint with the Deaf
Smith County Sheriff's Office.
Henderson has over 30 years of law en-
forcement experience, having retired last
summer from the Texas Department of
Public Safety, Texas Rangers. His law en-
forcement career began with the DPS and
Highway Patrol. In 1989, he was promoted
to Sergeant with the Rangers and was sta-
tioned in Pampa. During his tenure there,
his area of responsibility encompassed the
seven easternmost counties of the Texas
Panhandle, including Hemphill County.
Henderson was a long-time friend of the
late Sheriff Bowen, who encouraged him to
seek the position of Hemphill County Sher-
iff when he retired from the Rangers. With
last night's victory, Henderson has hon-
ored that commitment.
"I'm just humbled by the privilege to
Serve as Sheriff of Hemphill County,"
Henderson said Wednesday morning. "I
will work hard for all the citizens of this
county to do a good job, and to be responsi-
ble for and responsive to their needs. I am
open to any and all suggestions from the
citizens as to how I can best serve them."
Henderson said he expects to be very
busy in the coming months preparing for a
smooth transition into office. He has al-
ready begun making plans to meet with
other Sheriffs in the region, to learn their
systems and to get up to speed on jail stan-
dards and reporting requirements. "I have
already made plans to attend jailer and dis-
patching schools so that I have the knowl-
edge to properly supervise my office," he
Said. "I am looking forward to this
opportunity."
Sheriff Dean Butcher was not available
for comment and did not return our phone
call before press time.
