WELL AFTER MOST FOLKS had retired to their homes after a
hard day of voting Tuesday, the lights on the second floor of Hemp-
hill County Courthouse were still burning as a dedicated handful of
election workers still toiled. After the polling places closed at 7 p.m.,
weary election crews from each precinct trickled in throughout the
evening, their arms loaded with the bulky metal ballot boxes that
would convey the will of this county's registered voters. County and
District Clerk Brenda Perrin and her employees—Velda Billenwill-
ms, Janet Henderson and Roberta Haines—answered phones and
monitored and assisted with the ballot count.
Election judge Possum Jahnel and her assistants—Sheryl
Sanders and Jackie McPherson—scanned the write-in ballots for
any problems. Finally, when all the boxes were in and all the bal-
lots checked, each ballot was laboriously scanned into electronic
counters. Technology consultant Larry Gatlin stood by to assist
with problems, and was called on more than once to lend his advice
and help. Around 10 p.m. that evening, the computers crunched
numbers and reports of the final vote tally in each race were print-
ed out, revealing the election results.
An hour or so later, the lights of the courthouse were extin-
guished, and another long election day had ended.
Long-time election judge Janice Schafer said this week that the
volunteer labor pool is shrinking. Each year, she said, it is more dif-
ficult to find someone both willing and able to perform this essen-
tial public service. "Surely there are more employers out there who
would be willing to let their employees do this," she said, offering
her deep gratitude to those who already do.
Though admittedly tired after her 12-plus hour day on duty,
election judge Karen Gullet said the job is not without its perks.
"There's a lot of people who thank us," she said. "It really is pretty
uplifting."
Besides, said Judy Coward, who also volunteers as an election
judge, "It's something people need to do," and adds, "We do get in a
lot of good visiting."
In addition to those already mentioned, this year's election work-
ers included Darlene Purcell, Kelly English, Claudette Hand, Donna
Jenkins, Gene Coward, Sherry Wagoner, Vonda Robbins, Maggie
Autrey, Janet Parnell, Sheri Hensley, Hiram and Darinda Begert,
Charlotte and Mike Rollins, Annette Walser and Jane Rivers.
If you see them, be sure and tell them "Thanks." Democracy
wouldn't work near as well without them.
