COMMENDATION-NATIONAL RAILROAD PASSENGER
H.C.R. No. 64
WHEREAS, The National Railroad Passenger Corporation,
commonly known as Amtrak, operates the Sunset Limited route between
Los Angeles and New Orleans via El Paso, San Antonio, and Houston;
WHEREAS, The Sunset Limited route, 926 miles of which are in
Texas, provides needed rail passenger service to many citizens of
this state; and
WHEREAS, In a move to improve service on this important
route, Amtrak will begin operation of Sunset Limited superliners,
luxury long-distance trains, on February 20, 1981. The first
superliner to travel the route will arrive in El Paso on February
21 and in Houston and Beaumont on February 22; and
WHEREAS, Superliner service means the replacement of some
equipment built in the 1930's and 1940's and means significant
