Kevin were born. Brenda was a young widow with a daughter named
Michelle, who Melvin adopted and raised her as his own.
Life's Journey
JSewfo 31ZcvUm; beloved father, grandfather, and brother,
passed away peacefully on Friday, February 12, 2010. He was born
in San Antonio, Texas on August 14, 1952 to the late Rev E. J Martin
and Jessie Lee Alcorn Martin. Melvin's godparents were the late
Searcy and Lelo Dilworth who treated him as their own. He relished
having godparents to run to when he couldn't have his way at home.
When things turned sour there, he would run back to his parents home.
tJKdhifi accepted Christ at an early age under the leadership of the
late Rev J C. Bailey of St. John Baptist Church. He was active in the
choir, BYPU, a regular member of Sunday School and Vacation Bible
School.
the summers, Melvin was a shortstop with the Little League
Baseball team. Upon graduating from Edison High School, he
attended St. Phillips College and Trinity University It was at Trinity
that he became a member of the theatrical group called the Kenwood
Players. The group performed in several states Arkansas, Arizona,
Colorado, Texas, Louisiana and Washington, DC. They received the
key to the city in Baton Rogue, LA and at the Kennedy Center in
Washington, DC. The Kenwood Players also performed at various
schools in the San Antonio Independent School District and for the
Parks and Recreation Department during the summer
VKAwi followed in his brothers footsteps and joined the United
States Army on March 16, 1976. He served as an Administration
Specialist until his retirement on March 31, 1996. He had tours at
Fort Jackson, SC, Belgium, Fort Meade, MD, Fort Dix, NJ, and
Germany
Vfflkfe stationed in Belgium, he met and married the former Brenda
Moore Sanders. From this union, two sons, Jermaine and
his military retirement, Melvin returned home where he was
united with Galilee Missionary Baptist Church. At Galilee, he sang in
the Men's Chorus, Sanctuary Choir, served as President of the
Brotherhood, and participated in City-wide Mission and was a
volunteer with the Meals on Wheels Program. Melvin served
faithfully, until assuming the responsibility of helping to take care of
his father until his death and then the responsibility of staying with his
mother until her death. After the death of his father, he assumed the
role of patriarch of the family, something he cherished and wouldn't
let you forget who was in charge. Melvin was especially devoted to
the care of his mother, even to the point of moving into the homestead
because she felt protected with his being there.
his father was unable to sit on the porch to feed and watch the
birds eat, Melvin then became known as the Birdman. He purchased
bird seeds and fed his feathered friends. Melvin cared about
everything and everyone. He was a happy person who loved everyone
and would do anything you asked of him. He also loved his Spurs. It
is believed that he may have gone to his heavenly home after watching
them beat the Denver Nuggets.
was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, James,
Franklin, Isaac and Charles, Sr; sister Doris Jean Lightfoot and
sister-in-law Patricia Martin, nephew Raymond Jackson and niece
Deirdre L. White.
Xe is survived by sons Jermaine and Kevin Martin, daughter
Michelle Martin, and granddaughter Rhianna Martin of Reading,
England; sisters, Otis L. (Elder Joe) Powell Sr, Mary L. (Carey)
Lunsford of Jacksonville, FL, Joyce E. Johnson, Dorothy N (Walter)
Sawyers and Jo Betsy (Brian) Booker, aunt Ossie Mae Martin, uncle
Rev Vernon (Jean) Martin of Amarillo, TX, brother-in-law, Louis
Lightfoot, best friend, Willie Collins and special friend, Cynthia
Collins, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
