• Window treatments - Install storm or thermal win-
dows and doors or double-paned glass. A less expensive
alternative is plastic sheeting, which can be temporarily
fastened over doors and windows to prevent drafts and
retain cool air.
• Air leaks - Check for air leaks in and around air
ducts, windows, plumbing utilities, fireplace flues, attic
entrances and recessed light fixtures.
• Air conditioning filters - Clean or replace the filter
in your air conditioner monthly to help it run more
efficiently.

Research shows the elderly and young children are
most likely to be affected by the heat. This summer, TXU
Energy is partnering with community organizations
across the state to promote heat safety. In addition,
the company will distribute heat safety information to
approximately 20,000 Texans.
Some of the recommended heat safety tips include:
• Drink one glass of cool water for every 20 minutes
of heat exposure.
• Wear loose, light-colored absorbent cotton clothing.
• Avoid eating hot foods and heavy meals.
Earlier this month, TXU Energy announced again
that it has declared a moratorium on disconnects for
customers in need this summer. A flexible payment plan
is available for residential customers designated as low-
income, ill or disabled, or who are at least 62 years of
age. This is the fourth consecutive year the company has
offered summer protections to eligible customers.
Customers must contact TXU Energy at (800) 242-
9113 on or after July t to notify the company of their
needs and to sign up for special, more flexible payment
plans. These measures will be in effect July 1 through
September 30, 2010.

Development Corporation of Abilene. The DCOA is pro-
viding funding for the necessary facility equipment with
a grant of $165,000. "It's a great example of cooperation
and a win-win deal for the community — TSTC and The
Grace gain a downtown location to further their pro-
grams, the AIC gains a long-term tenant at a competitive
lease rate and the DCOA assists with workforce develop-
ment, one of its missions," Burdine commented.
Local workforce data cites more than 700 restaurants
operate in the Abilene area. In addition, more than
7,100 people are employed in the Abilene culinary and
food service industry.
Over the coming months, the T&P facility will be reno-
vated with new equipment and fitted to serve the needs
of the culinary academy. TSTC and The Grace Museum
plan to open the doors to the new Abilene culinary acad-
emy by January 2011.

First court appearance for Ft. Hood shooting suspect
ANGELA K. BROWN Authorities have said it could be held as early as July
Associated Press Writer
FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — A military court hearing
has begun for the Army psychiatrist accused of gunning
down 13 people at Fort Hood, and his defense attorney
is likely to seek a delay.
Maj. Nidal Hasan (nih-DAHL' hah-SAHN') made
his first courtroom appearance Tuesday, but wasn't
expected to speak at the hearing. Military prosecutors
and defense attorneys instead were to discuss case
preparations.
Defense attorney John Galligan says he'll seek to delay
Hasan's Article 32 hearing. That's similar to a Chilian
grand juiy proceeding in which a judge hears witness
testimony to determine whether the case should go to
trial.
Police: 8-year-old, two
relatives shot outside home
BURNET, Texas (AP) — Police say an 8-year-old and
two family members were shot by a relative outside their
home, which is directly across the street from a police
station.
The victims were hospitalized in the Austin area. Their
conditions were not released.
Police say the shooting happened early Monday in
Burnet, Texas, about 40 miles northwest of Austin. The
shooting victims were Denise Longoria, whose age was
not provided, her 21-year-old son Hector Molina and an
8-year-old girl.
Thirty-three-year-old Ishmael Rodriguez remained
in the Burnet County Jail on Tuesday on three counts
of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. His bonds
total $450,000. A jailer had no information on whether
he had an attorney.

thank Tommy McCoy, his family and the

and comfort that was shown to our family.
