HOLLIE KENNEDY SMITH
Born to Life Nov. 16,1910
Born to Life Eternal Jan. 9, 2011
Hollie was born Nov. 16, 1910, in Dallas, Texas. She
was joined in Christian marriage to Thomas L. Kennedy
before he passed in 1945. By God's grace, Hollie would
again enjoy the love and companionship of a mate
who would care for her, Elmer E.
Smith and they were married in
1948, until she would place him
into God's arms of care and grace
in 2000. Thomas and Hollie had
one son, Thomas F. Kennedy, who
preceded her in death on Oct. 16,
2009.
Hollie came to live in Sweetwater
in 2007 to enjoy her extended fam-
ily and to allow for them to assist in
her care during her advanced years.
This last Nov. 16, 2010, Hollie cel-
ebrated her 100th birthday!
Faith Life — grace given to dem-
onstrate a great care for her fam-
ily-
Loves — reading and buying
clothes were her passions in life, much time at the
beach, walking, swimming.
Character — caring for her family was her top priority.
Well opinionated, understood the things of the world
and kept current with world activities, intelligent, per-
sonable, not an outgoing person and often kept to her-
self, not a great social networker, but deeply gave herself
to the relationships closest to her, resilient, dealt with
adversity head on and rose above the life challenges.
Hollie was every bit the lady, loved wife, mother,
grandmother and friend. She is survived by her daugh-
ter-in-law, Kathy Kennedy of Sweetwater; and grand-
son, Thomas Hines Kennedy and wife Jennifer of San
Antonio, Texas.
For the gift of life given to Hollie on Nov. 16, 1910,
which lasted 100 years, one month and 24 days on this
side of eternity and for the gift of life eternal given to her
on Jan. 9, 2011, we say "thanks be to God through our
Lord, Jesus Christ." And all God's people say, "Amen!"
A graveside service for Hollie Kennedy Smith, 100,
of Sweetwater, will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan.
15, 2011,at Sweetwater Cemetery with Rev. Steve Davis

United States used 8.9 million barrels gasc e a day.
"On Aug. 7, when oil was at $72 a barrel, the average
retail price for a gallon of gasoline in Texas was $2.63,
today it's $2.94, an increase )f thirty one cents a gal-

finalizing Texas rules
DALLAS (AP) — The U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency says it wants input from industries and the public
before finalizing regulations on greenhouse gas emissions.
Environmental groups and others are expected to speak at
an EPA hearing in Dallas on Friday.
A federal appeals court's ruling this week allows the EPA to
issue permits directly to Texas industries. The EPA made that
decision after Texas refused to comply with the new Clean Air
Act regulations.
Until the final rules are in place, the EPA will issue permits
using interim regulations based on its guidelines issued to
states last year.
Texas is suing to stop the EPA from implementing the plan,
which requires the nation's largest industries to meet more
stringent greenhouse gas emissions standards in new facili-
ties or ones undergoing major modifications.
list of possible Hutchison
successors takes shape
HENRY C. JACKSON
Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey
Hutchison's retirement announcement nearly two years
before Texas voters will choose her successor gives
aspiring candidates plenty of time to prepare.
The list of Republicans and Democrats who might be
interested was already stalling to take shape Thursday
after Hutchison announced in a letter to supporters that
she would not seek reelection when her term ends in
2012.
The state's first female senator has occupied her seat
for nearly two decades and, observers said, many Texas
politicians have been biding their time for a chance to
replace her.
his news will cause a lot of political dominoes to fall
in Texas," said Mark McKinnon, a former George W.
Bush political adviser and a longtime observer of Texas
politics. "A lot of pols have been waiting a long time to
move up."
The list is longer on the Republican side, led by popu-
lar Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst. Personally wealthy from a
career in the energy industry, Dewhurst could self-fund
what would be a costly statewide run, a huge advantage
in a vast state.
He was deferential on Thursday, saying "today is Kay
Bailey Hutchison's day." Still, he was not above stoking
speculation.
"I fully intend to explore running for the United States
Senate, and should I run, I will run with the intention of
winning and continuing to serve the people of Texas,"
he said.
Other potential candidates also gingerly signaled their
intention to explore the race. Railroad Commissioner
Elizabeth Ames Jones offered warm praise for Hutchison
before saying that, she, too, would consider the race.
Other Republicans dio are expected to run or consider
a run are Jones' colleague on the Railroad Commission
Michael Williams, Dal .s Mayor Tom Leppert, and for-
mer Secretary of State Roger Williams.
The Democratic field is less clear, though national
Democrats believe they can make the race competitive.
Former Houston Mayor Bill White, who like Hutchison
lost a gubernatorial bid to Texas Gov. Rick Periy in
2010, has said he will not run for Senate, although
Democrats may try to persuade him. Other potential
candidates include former congressman and current
U.S. Trade Rep. Ron Kirk and John Sharp, the state's
former comptroller.
In becoming the first sitting senator to announce she
won't run in 2012, Hutchison said she wanted to give
Texas voters "ample time to consider w ho my succes-
sor will be." Whoever that is, they will be following a
woman whose popularity has remained strong despite a
moderate streak 1 a deeply conservative state and her
share of setbacks in more than 30 topsy-turvy years in
Texas politics.
Growing up in La Marque, Texas, Hutchison had
hoped for a legal career, but after being turned down by
large law firms because of her gender, she shifted first to
journalism, then to banking before building a successful
career in politics. .After serving two terms as a state rep-
resentative, Hutchison was appointed to the National
Transportation Safety Board in 1976 She lost a race for
the U.S. House in 1982, then left politics to work in the
banking industry.
Hutchison returned to the political scene in 1990 and
never looked back. .After winning election as state trea-
surer, she parlayed her popularity into a special election
victory to replace then-Sen. Lloyd Bentsen in 1993,
when Bentsen left to become President Bill Clinton's
treasury secretary. Hutchison was then elected to a full
term in 1994 and comfortably won reelection in 2000
and 2006.
Hutchison's career took a final twist in 2010, when,
after several times being mentioned as 1 potential
candidate for governor, si e decided to challenge Perry
in the GOP primary. She was resoundingly defeated
and thought about retiring soor afterward. Though it
was difficult for her family, Hutchison said she stayed
because she could not leave Texas at such a critical
time.
"I intended to leave this office long before now, but I
was persuaded to continue in order to avoid disadvan-
tage to our state," H utchison said. "The last two years
have been particularly difficult, especially for 111} family,
but I felt it would be wrong to leave the Senate during
such a critical period."

Police: Boy, 8, died of
accidental shotgun blast
DALLAS (AP) — Police say an 8-year-old Dallas boy
whom playmates say was shot dead by an armed intruder
actually died from an accidental shotgun blast from one of
his playmates.
A Dallas police statement issued Thursday night says
Keiveon Johnson was one of four children playing with
a shotgun inside a north Dallas apartment when the gun
went off, killing the boy. A 6-year-old boy was treated at a
Dallas hospi for shotgun pellet wounds to the legs and
discharged.
No arrests have been made, but the investigation has not
concluded. Police aren't commenting on whether there were
any adults present.
The incident happened just before 4 p.m. Thursday. Police
say the children who witnessed the shooting initially said a
masked man entered the apartment and shot the boy.
Texas burial for two Vietnam
vets shot down in 1969
DALLAS (AP) — Two Vietnam War veterans whose
remains were identified decades after their plane was shot
down will be laid to rest in Texas.
A funeral with full military honors was scheduled Friday
at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.
Air Force Col. James Dennany was 34 when his plane
was shot down over Laos in November 1969.
The Defense Department's POW/Missing Personnel
Office on Wednesday also announced positive identifica-
tion of the remains of 27-year-old Ma Robert Tucci of
Detroit.
Tucci was the pilot. Dennany, who was born in Mattawan,
Mich., was the weapons system officer.
A search team in 1999 discovered wreckage and some
human remains in the area.

More new pages on the website include an About Us sec-
tion where the mission of the library is posted and users
can learn about the library's history. Another page lists the
Services and Policies, including how to get your very own
library card.
Another great feature is the eShelf and Research page.
Through the easily grouped lists, users can find out about
the current best-seller books, as well as access various local
sites with the links provided. Yet anothe page, Espanol,
can connect Spanish-reading users with links of sites in
Spanish.
Brock mentioned that one great perk to the online cata-
log is that users can search from the convenience of their
home, school or wherever they are for a particular book,
even without an account. Users with an account, however,
can even renew books with the updated website. Brock also
noted that the library hopes offer a new service within the
next month on the website, with a link to a site to download
audiobooks and e-books.
The website is hosted for free by the Texas State Library
and set up the framework for the site. Brock updates the site
and makes any changes and additions as needed.
"I think it's more user friendly," Brock said about the new
website. Visit www.sweetwaterlibrary.org to take your own
tour of the new and easy to access website.
